| O.K., I'm currently on Atkins, but regularly cheating. I have read Atkins, Sears, Schwarabein books, and know about the effects of carbs and insulin. I am currently reading and considering switching to CAD, but want to know if I need to read the stuff about insulin and the effects that too much insulin has on our weight loss efforts. As I mentioned, I have read all three of the authors above, and need to know if CAD says anything different about this? I think this is a WOE I can live with and am eager and ready to try it. I also want my 12 year old daughter to start with me. Atkins was too restrictive for her, as was Schwarzbein. And I'm feeling the same for myself about Atkins now. Thanks to all for your imput. | Hey Teri! I have watched your various *studies* of different low-carb lifestyles with interest and I love the way you educate yourself about each woe. I would like to recommend The New Glucose Revolution by Jennie Brand-Miller, PhD., et.,al. This doesn't really have anything to do *specifically* with Carb Addicts, but I think you might find it helpful with CAD -- not to mention that I think you will appreciate the information. It will certainly help you make the *better* carb choices for your reward meals and the in-depth understanding of how certain carbs affect our insulin response more than others is something that Schwarzbein touched on. I absolutely LOVE this book (despite the authors' obtuse dismissal of low-carb lifestyles ) and I think you might really enjoy it, too.HTH, Summer www.herstorygirl.com |

Thanks Summer for the recommendation. I've seen you recommend that book at other posts, but I need to find it and read it. I know that the LC way is right for me, but it's just finding the right one. Atkins was great initially, but it stopped working after 6 months, then I stalled for 6 months. Then I switched to Schwarzbein, didn't lose anything actually gained, but she does say that can happen during the healing) , but did feel better. But her diet is so difficult, cutting out all sugar subs, salt, etc. It's a great way of life, but so hard. At least for me it was. Then I switched back to Atkins in September, but haven't lost anything, so I guess I'm still in my stall (going on 14 months now). I'm really hoping CAD will be a better LC WOL for me. Sounds like the perfect combination "having your cake and eating it too", even literally if I want. I'll look for that book at the library, maybe after I finish reading CAD. Teri

Teri, "Carbohydrate Addicts Diet" is the original book. The authors tweaked the plan a bit with "Carbohydrate Addicts Lifespan Program". Hence the initials CAD or CALP. Good luck with finding your proper WOE. Ilse 380/304.6(WW)/229.5(current)/154 5'7" "It's kind of fun to do the impossible" Walt Disney

Thanks Ilse, I think I'll go to the library and pick up CALP. Right now I have CAD, and have been reading the past posts on this site, as well as other sites, and there have been some tweaks in the plan. Yesterday I started. I think I did o.k. I felt satisfied after my RM, and didn't feel like snacking in the late evening, even though I was bored. I drank lots of water, but that habit is a carryover from Atkins/Schwarzbein plans. I did feel hungry between my other 2 meals, and felt the urge to snack on a chunk of cheese (like I did on Atkins), but resisted! {long sigh}.....someday this weight is going to come off and stay off. I'm really getting tired of trying to search for the perfect LC plan! Teri

Teri, Hi and Welcome. You have lots more low-carb knowledge under your belt than me! You may have already found this out if you have read some more of the posts on here, but one of the big differences (I think) between CAD and CALP is that with CALP you can have snacks if you want. Of course they are to be off of the CM list. Another difference is that CALP is not as strict about portion sizes. I hope this works for you and look forward to "seeing" you around here! Amy
