Just wondering what everyone thinks about all these products out there now. When I started CAD like 4, 5 years ago there were like no products. I simply ate 4 grams carbs at breakfast and lunch each, and have my RM. Today, tehre is atkins cereal, chocolates, candies, cake mix, brownie batter, etc etc etc. I wonder of for those of us, here on CAD/CALP don't need to supplement with those products b/c we do not restrict ourselves from anything--even that slice of choc cake with dinner! Just wondering if utilizing these products can end up sabotaging. I ask this, as I just had a bowl of Atkins Morning Start cereal, and since the portion is 2/3 at 5 grams carbs, i had to measure according to have my cereal and milk and not go over 4gram--the point, i'm still hungry b/c I had like 1/4 of a bowl of cereal with a splash of milk. And thus, this thread was born.....

Gia,

I don't really use the LC products, except for every now and then an LC Bar in a pinch. I do my best to eat real foods.

Actually, I've been off-plan since Thanksgiving and will be getting back on tomorrow or Sunday. Then, I plan to get some soy flour and try some of the recipes in the CALP book... like pancakes, muffins, etc. Never tried them before. From what I remember they use cottage cheese, eggs and soy flour (among other things). I usually do an egg dish in the morning (prepared ahead and then nuked). But, every now and then (like maybe on the weekends when DH and DD are having pancakes), it would be nice to have something different.

My recommendation to you... eat real foods at the beginning (maybe for at least a month) and see how things go. Then, if you want, add in some LC products (maybe one at a time) and see what that does. I think no matter what LC lifestyle you choose there is always some tweaking to fit your individual body and lifestyle.

Welcome back and good luck to you!

Gia, As a relative new person to low carbs, about five weeks , I have not used many of the products yet. This week is the first week that I bought low carb ice cream , and the Atkins flour to make biscuits and pancakes, but i have not tried them yet. I have tried the shakes and I really like them....low carb, filling, and tasty . I also tried a carb control advantage apple cinnamon bar and it was horrible . I bought Splenda and used it in heated riccota cheese this morning, kind of like a cream of wheat substitute. It was good . I would be interested in knowing about other products and if people like them, too,. Thanks, Joanna

AS far as I know, the CAD plan doesn't use net carbs. So, the actual carb count may be higher than you want to use at a CM. My understanding is that anything not on the "allowed foods list" should be saved for a RM.

On the Suzanne Somers discussion group, there are bunches of recipes. A lot of them are LC.

I am actually a huge fan of Splenda and have been using it for a while, tho I have read some articles that cite links to colon cancer that make me nervous.

As for CAD and net carbs...that's an interesting point. I had just assumed that b/c this book was written b4 the concept of net carbs, it was okay to count my 4 grams by the new net carb amounts (tho I can't say I'm not sometimes skeptical about the net carb #). But that is a good point and perhaps why I felt frustrated with CAD last year.

And as for soy flour, not to rain on anyone's parade, but personally i hate the stuff. I tried baking with it different ways and its really no good in my opinion. Wheat flour is good, but I don't know how CAD would feel about that. Also, if u want pancakes, atkin pancakes are not bad. And the BEST pancake syrup is KETO. AMAZING. thick, mapley, and so good and 0 carbs, 0 calories. I give it to ppl not on low carb and they cant tell the diff.

and thanks for the welcome and the luck!

I use the LC products for my RM--that way I don't have to be so concerned about the actual carb counts--my CMs are as written in the books--that way I really don't get hungry--playing around with all the new lc products is what made atkins not work for me to begin with--good luck to you!
