Hi all - I've just started CAD as of 1/5/04 - I've read the book thoroughly and cannot figure out if snacking, low-carb snacking, is allowed in between meals?? Also, it is imperative to eat the vegetables at breakfast and lunch as well as with the Reward Meal. Please let me know how you're doing with this diet!! Thanks.

Liebchen (makes me think darling or sweetie!),

According to the CALP book, snacking is allowed. All meals, CM, CS, and RM, should contain lc veggies from the list of allowed foods. They say that the CM and CS don't have to be balanced (visual same amout of LC veggies and protein)

Some of us post journals that you are welcome to check out if it helps for ideas. I post a journal. So does DebbyH. Haven't checked out any others.

It does work. I was 380 pounds and lost 100 solely by doing CALP. The other weight I have lost is from a combination of CALP and WW. I am 233.5 as of this morning.

Liebchen,

From what I remember, according to the CAD book you should not snack in the first two weeks. Then, take a look at your average weekly weight loss and if you are losing a lot, you can add a snack. With CAD there are 4 diets (or levels of the diet). But, as Ilse said, with CALP snacking is allowed. CALP seems more flexible to me.

Also, you really should have LC veggies with your 2 CMs (breakfast and lunch, for me). Although, I don't always get veggies in at breakfast. But, I do tend to lose better when I eat veggies at breakfast. I also lose better if I'm exercising. Exercise helps me in lots of ways. Need to start it up again.

I probably follow a combo of the two, but more close to CALP than CAD. I just started a journal on the 4th (to post daily menus and keep me 'honest') when I got back on plan after being off around the holidays.

I started last Jan 12th and lost 42 pounds on the program (even with a couple of off-plan weeks). I was off-plan the whole month of September and gained back a couple of pounds. Was having a hard time getting back on-plan, so I decided to switch to Atkins. Lost 10 pounds on induction (was very surprised about this), but after 4 or 5 more weeks I wasn't really losing anything and was getting tired of counting carbs... thought it would take forever to find my CCLL. Also, it was becoming more difficult to see my DH eating a roll with the LC soup I had made.

Anyway... to make a long story short, I decided to switch back to CALP. It works (when I do it), and it is much more simple for me. Also, for me, it makes it easier to cook for (and eat with) my family (skinny DH and 2 yr old DD). And, for me, it makes it easier to eat out - either at a restaurant or at someone's home. It's just much more livable for me... it's more suited to my personality, I think.

Well, now that I've written a book, let me wish you much success. Also, feel free to start a PT (private topic) with me anytime if you would like to get in further discussion.

Have a great day!

Debby

Liebchen,
Hi and welcome! You will love this plan and love this site! I did CAD for many years and lost and maintained a 20 lbs weightloss. Then I was on and off, and all over the place for the year of 2003, and started CAD again 1/1/04. I personally have always preferred the CAD diet and book over CALP. But that's me. I do think however, that if you can handle no snacks, that it is good to do teh 2 week "induction" that the original CAD book says. Then, just as Debby pointed out, based on that loss, there are different versions or levels that you can go to next. I just think 2 weeks of the strictest version will definitely give great results that will inspire you , and then from that point, it only gets better, and less strict. But this is just my opinion.

And for me, a new thing I decided on this time around, is not so much for wieght loss but for health: technically u can have chocolate cake, ice cream, cookies, etc every nite with ur reward meal (when eaten properly) and still lose. For me, b/c I began always choosing this type of carb for my RM, i was not getting enuff fruit or other veggies and eating too much cakes and sweets. I still lost weight. But I dont think its healthy, or the healthiest route. So this time aorund, I have decided to allocate specific #s per week of what kind of carb Ill have for RM. I haven't worked it all out yet but I'm thinking something like: 7 days in a week, so 2 days fruit, 2 day bread or potatoe, 1 day higher carb veggies, 2 days cake or sweets. In addition to health, im sure selecting better carbs over the less great carbs will also probably boost weight loss, too. I havent actually put this into effect yet, as I have had ice cream, cake, and donut for my RM carb for the last 3 nites. Hey I'm not perfect. But to put that in perspective, since starting Jan 1 (and I didnt really start 100% until Jan 3) I have lost 4 lbs. By the end of the week, I will have my updated average weight loss, which will be less than 4, probably more like 2 or 3.

Anyway, this plan is totally doable and livable and you'll love it!

Hey Lieb--Think you have been given very good advice--the first two weeks of only eating 2 CMs and one RM is an important step--I never ever in my life would have thought I could go without snacks--the fact is that now that I went thru that step I have found I don't need to snack at all--

I think the key to CAD/CALP is to eat a max of 4 times a day, including snacks. If you follow directions, you really stop getting hungry!!

give it a try!

Absolutely! I have been doing CAD 100% for exactly a week today and there is a HUGE difference in my appetite! I mean, HUGE! Yesterday, I had to make myself eat at least something small at 5pm b/c I had not eaten yet for the entire day. I just was not hungry at all and never thought to eat. I mean, I dont think its good to go all day w/o eating and I'm not advocating that, but imagine, still not hungry by 5pm.... When I eat carbs, all I do is think about food and i'm constantly hungry. I wonder how u're doing? Come check in when you can!
