Default Gylcemic index

I'm currently on atkins and have been very happy however a friend of mine that has been on atkins as well and is also very happy suggested i read the SB book to get a better grasp of some concepts. My question from the book is the chapter on the Glycemic index. Throughout the beginning of the book he suggest brown rice or wild rice over white or instant. How come instant rice has a lower GI then the brown rice. Isn't this contradicting what he said? According to the book the Instant rice has a GI of 65, and Brown rice of 69. I'm confused can someone explain? Also what is the "good" or "normal" range for GI? whene i see all these numbers in the 50-60's is that High, med, low?

Actually instant rice has a GI of 46 and is considered to be Low on the index. Brown rice is medium at 55. Hope this clears that up for you.

It might seem like that contradicts what he says, but it doesn't, because even though the brown rice is medium, it is still fairly good for you!

As for being confused about the numbers on the range for the GI index, it goes as follows:

Low Glycemic Index Food (less than 55)
Medium (between 55 and 70)
High (More than 70)

and basically it means that low is probably the best to go with, the medium is still okay, and high is alright only in great moderation or depending on the type of food you are consuming but for the most part should be avoided.

I hope this helps!

I just look at the charts and see what foods are listed as lower or higher in the glycemic index.
