| I usually hear that they are too high in fat and calories. I tend to think this is a far better fat than cheese or dairy but that's my personal opinion. I have had weight gain in the past when I eat too many nuts and seeds. Do you think this is a temporary gain and will pass or is this an indication of me needing to not eat them? I do like them. I have a bowl of brazil nuts sitting on my table now that I've been munching on. I much prefer that to sugary snacks so overall I guess it's a good thing, even if I gain.... |

| HI, Bear, You've hit on my favorite snack food - nuts. I love 'em. A few weeks ago I was on a huge Brazil nut kick. I ate a lot of them. I think the fact that I don't eat dairy or low carb specialty items made from the "forbidden fruits" leaves room for more nuts in my woe. I certainly can lose when eating them, though I believe I lose faster if I measure and limit them. Anyone eating nuts who is stalled or gaining should definitely consider cutting back or even giving them up for a while. They are very nutritious, and I know I have heard of studies that show nut eaters are healthier. If you've gained in the past while eating lots of nuts, it would make sense to evaluate the situation. Maybe limiting yourself to one or two ounces a day would be a good idea. Easier said than done, I know. Hope this helps, Alice

| limit nuts? isn't that an oxymoron?! LOL. I cracked and ate several nuts earlier but wisely pushed away the bowl. I wanted chicken with soups on it but now I don't know what to eat. I don't think canned soups would be neanderthal! |

| LOL @ Bear! It sure is an oxymoron when the bowl is in front of me! Making your own chicken broth from bones and innards is *very* paleo. Do you like to cook? I want to try one of Ray Audette's recipes for instant soup made by adding some pemmican to boiling water. Need to make more pemmican. :eyes: I was thinking one could add dried vegetables to it for instant meat and veggie soup. Alice

| I like to cook, now whether I'm a GOOD cook is questionable! I ended up with chicken and a vegetable last night. This morning I had an atkins shake...hmmmm..can't see the ole' cavemen flaming up one of those over an open fire but I had them in stock and figured at least it's low carb. I have to eat out tonight and my cohort is wanting pizza. Challenges everywhere. I have to stand up as a witness in a wedding ceremony this weekend and I tried on the required formal attire and thought I'd never breathe again...or at least speak in a normal voice I'm hitting the weights during lunch break today and will jog a little after dinner tonight. Maybe if I'm consistent with all this I will be able to wear my suit AND smile this weekend. |

| Hi Bear, Welcome to the Paleo forum.....I too eat lots of nuts, I just love them and they don't seem to affect my weight. Maybe this is because I have cut out all dairy products except a small piece of cheese...and they do say that if you are going to cheat, then cheese is the best cheat on Paleo. LOL I also eat loads of oranges and although they seem to affect people differently, again, I have been lucky in that I have not put on any weight, in fact I am still losing weight. Take care, love Louloo. x

| Hi Louloo, Well, I'm glad cheese is a good cheat because my pizza date turned out to be lunch. We went to Pizza Hut,..which btw is having a special from 12th to the 18th if you buy a lunch buffet you get the second for 25 cents. It's their company's 25th anniversary. NOT that I'm a cheap person, that was unknown to me before we got there. ... We're packing a picnic dinner tonight so I'll throw in my jar of almond butter and some nuts, fruits and vegetables. I picked the toppings off the pizza and ate 2 huge salads with ranch dressing. Ok, so the ole' cavemen didn't use ranch but I can't stand salads without it. I had some time on lunch break so I hit the gym and did some weightlifting. We'll go walking for an hour or so after the picnic. all in all, I'm enjoying this, not even counting carbs. Doesn't seem like you need to if you eat this way. I like that. I like oranges, it would be easy to eat those all day! work calls. see ya' B. |
