Default Newbie to CAD - Questions???

I must admit I have not read the book - I have been doing Atkins but just heard of this concept by surfing....
I read the sticky "cheat sheet" for CAD and I have a question regarding the protein amount....
Here is my menu for today:
Breakfast: 1 egg and 1 sausage (10g Protein)
1 cup cauliflower

Lunch: 1/2 can tuna (10g Protein)
Lettuce, cucumber for salad
Ranch Dressing

Snack: 1 Cheese stick (7g Protein)

Dinner: Steak (approx 6 grams) about the size of a deck of cards..
1/2 c rice
Green beans

The cheat sheet has ounces as a measurement for protein but what is the gram amount??? Is this menu okay?? Do you see any changes/suggestions that need to be done? Oh yeah - Do you have to have a salad at dinner??
Can I have two cups of coffee a day with 4 packets of sweetner (2 per cup) or will this throw me off???

Thanks for your help! I am sure I will have many more questions!!!

If I remember correctly 28 grms is equal to 1 oz, 16 oz is one pound,
hope this helps.

Thumbs up Re: Newbie to CAD - Questions???

Linda Lou,

Welcome to our group! I'm not an expert on CAD. I'm actually doing CALP (and probably at this point my own modified version ). With CALP they just say normal portion sizes.

I would recommend getting the book (CAD or CALP or both) and reading it/them. You can always check it out from the library first before buying it.

Just looking at your menu, I'd say you're doing fine. Are you drinking your water? Also, be careful of the ranch dressing... some are okay, like HVR, but others have too much sugar.

As far as the salad with dinner, that's a rule of CALP not CAD. They are slightly different.

The coffee thing is, IMO, is a YMMV kind of thing. The rules (from what I can remember) are something to the effect of only a little cream in it (can't remember the amount) and you have to drink it in 15 minutes. Well... I drink 3 big mugs w/half&half and splenda every morning, and it hasn't hurt me a bit. But, it does hurt some people. So, you may just have to experiment a bit and see. It could cause cravings and/or slow weight loss.

I have a journal on this site. You could check there (My diary) to see how/what I eat just to give you some ideas and a feel for things.

HTH. Best wishes in your journey! ... and feel free to ask more questions any time.

12-14 oz of protein is about 84-90 grams of protein (mulitply by 7)

According to Schwarzbein, to calculate your protein needs:

Take your current weight

Divide by 2.2

Multiply that amount by 1.0 and 1.25.

This gives you a minumun protein range in grams. To get to ounces, divide the two amounts by 7.

For example: if you weigh 200 pounds, your weight in kg is 90.0.

Your protein intake in grams is 90-113.6. This translate to 13-16oz of protein daily.

I hope this helps.

The salad is supposed in the RM is supposed to help fill you up, so you won't be as likely to be hungry for all those tempting carbs.

As far as the sweetener goes, whether it hurts you or not can depend on what kind of sweetener you are using. The Hellers do advise that using a sweetener during a CM or CS can trigger an isulin response, just from the taste of the sweetness. I found that Equal (aspartame/Nutrasweet) triggers strong sugar cravings, so I try to avoid it as much as possible.
