Exclamation Aspiring vegetarian

Wow, is this a sight for sore eyes! I am really happy I came across this. I have throughout my life wanted to become vegetarian, but never wanted it bad enough to take the plunge and give up steaks. But since starting atkins almost 2 years ago, I find meat just doesn't have the pizzazz it used to and vegies are like diamonds. I love finding new vegie low carb meat products. So ironically, this is the most motivated I have ever been to go vegetarian. And now there are you guys. I've got it made! :bellydanc

Hi, Amaryllis,

I have a vegetarian lowcarb friend who loves quorn products, especially the mock chicken. Have you ever tried them?

My sister Claudia, who wrote the recent article

Confessions of a Carb Counting Whole Foods Eating Vegtarian

enjoys many of the Morningstar Farms products. I love their 'sausage' patties and often serve their 'chicken nuggets' to my son.

Paleofornow: I found the quorn brand you mentioned and it's really good! The texture is a lot like meat. And what's nice is that it isn't made of soy for a change. But of mushrooms. So that's cool.

LCandrea: I love their sausage patties too, but will have to try the chicken nuggets. I don't know how I missed them? Guess I'm still not good at browsing vegie stuff. And I am going to go to Claudia's article. Thanks for the link.

I just saw a little article saying again that dark chocolate is good for you, so I am having a (low carb) piece with my Saturday morning coffee. Got to stay healthy you know ;- )

Hi guys!

I have been doing atkins the vegetarian way for a little over a year and it's always nice to meet some vegetarians!

here is a low carb forum that has a pretty active vegetarian low carb section:
http://forum.lowcarber.org/forumdisplay.php?f=109

I like the quorn stuff as well. It is super good and nice for a change of pace. I use a lot of the morningstar veggie crumbles as well in place of ground beef in recipes.

Any good recipes you all have that doesn't use any veggie meats??

One of our favorite is a cheddar vegetable chowder and spanakopita made baked in a dish instead of wrapped in phyllo dough

It is SO good to see a low-carb vegetarian board!!! I have returned the vegetarian lifestyle for 2 years now, and I can't imagine why I ever went back to eating meat!! (yuck!) Anyway, consuming all those carbs (bagels, pasta, etc) put about 10 lbs on me very quickly and I have been trying to find other low-carbers who are vegetarians, but that is not easy!!! So it's great to know you're out there! Please don't let this thread fizzle!! We need each other.

I don't know what I'd do without Morningstar Farms. I love their Grillers, and Tomato/Basil 'burgers'. Since I'm doing CAD and not Atkins, I can also have tofu burgers (on a bun!) during my reward meal, and I also use the Morningstar crumbles when making chilli or spaghetti. I can have carbs once a day during my RM, so it makes it alot easier to stick with. And it works! Of course, I am very creative with my veggies and love all of them (except brussels sprouts) and after a huge, delicious salad and grilled veggies, what more can anyone want? Okay, so maybe a donut??

Where do you buy the quorn products? Health food store? I'd like to try them. Until next time...hang in there!!!

The quorn stuff is frozen in a health food store. I can get it from my food coop.

I'm a meat-eating friend of vegetarians. I haven't tried the quorn yet, but think I will someday.

Hang in there vegetarian friends!

Hi Everyone,

I prefer to be a vegetarian but I have been force feeding myself on small amounts of very lean meat because that is the way I thought that I had to do it to follow the LC eating plans.

I have taken a note of all the links and I am going to read Claudia's story, then I will be back for questions and answers if I may.

Thank you Alice for putting me on to this forum....kiss, kiss.

Hi everyone,

I loved the story by Candice, wow didn't she do well? I have decided against vegetarian low carb though because I hate quorn and mushrooms and I am unhappy using soy products and anything else to make up a meal will contradict what I have been doing on Paleo lately......so I am staying with the Neanderthin WOE....it suits me best so it is silly to change it.

I wish everyone else following a vegetarian LC WOE good luck and good health.

you all have me interested in this. I used to be a vegan but found I needed more protein and was overdoing the carbs. I have discovered morningstar farms crumbles and make tacos, chili, and anything else I can think of with it. Have you all lost weight doing this? I'd like to get back into my vegan life but I hate soy foods and need to avoid carbs.

suggestions?

Hello ladies!!

Can somebody explain the taboo that some people have attached to soy products? I've seen it mentioned here and several times in other threads, and I am just curious. I know there's some evidence that soy tends to cause weight gain/stall in some people...is that it?

I'm obviously vegetarian, and soy based products comprise about 50-75% of my protein intake(tofu, soyburgers, etc.) I'm also doing CAD and it seems to be working fine with the soybased products (the Hellers actually include vegetarian menus/recipes in their book :jumpgreen ...which include soy products)
Any info on the topic will be appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Whew! I just answered my own question..and very disturbed about the answer. Apparently consuming high amounts of soy products can contribute to Alzheimers, decreased nutrient absorption, breast cancer....YIKES!! It seems the phytic acid in soybeans are the culprit. Fermented soy products are okay, such as miso and tempeh.

I am deeply depressed now! How could I have missed this piece of info? 20/20 apparently covered this back in 2000!!! I want to dismiss it as hype, but why risk it? Now I've got to let go of my Morningstar and Boca products?? Well here's to hoping tempeh and miso taste good!!! Oh how hard it is to eat ANYTHING safe these days!!!!

Anyway, for those of you who aren't in the know yet (as blissfully unaware as I was), check out this link. Dr Mercola was annoying me at first, but then I read another article he wrote diet and autism(my youngest son was diagnosed a year and a half ago) and he won me over. http://www.mercola.com/article/soy/avoid_soy.htm

Yes, there is some amount of controversy about soy products. Like anything else, soy in moderation is probably benign, but I'd be concerned, too, if it were my major protein source. If you are an ovo-lacto veggie, of course you will have other options which will make your LC life much easier. I wish you well!

The Weston Price Foundation has several good articles about soy on their website. I quit consuming soy after reading about it on both Dr. Mercola's site and the Weston Price site. When you think about it, most soy foods are highly processed and processed foods are not something that I want in my diet anymore.

http://www.westonaprice.org/soy/index.html

A warning. Weston Price doesn't support vegetarian diets and has several articles to that effect on their site.

I have lost weight doing this, but do eat occasional meat. It's slow going but I don't know if it's the vegie part of it or just me. My only concern is how much cheese I am eating. I read this book "eat, drink and be healthy" which seems to indicate that as far as your blood fats go, dairy is worse than meat. And high triglycerides run in my family. But unless I develop a taste for bugs, it is really hard to get enough protein. And not go hungry. But I think it is a worthwhile goal, even if you are not perfect at it.
