I broke down and ordered some of Dr. Sears' Liquid Fish Oil. I should get it on Monday. Will let ya'll know if I see any improvements. For more info, Dr. Sears discusses this fish oil in his book OmegaRx Zone.

I am on Atkins, but I did read the OmegaRX zone and found it very interesting. I am still a bit skeptical, but would be very interested in hearing your experiences with it. For now, I will just take the affordable kind, along with Maggie's cereal (which is made with flax meal).

I've been taking Sears' fish oil supplements for almost a year now. I started by taking four per day and am now down to two. I have some premature graying and after taking the pills for a few months, the gray hairs began to grow in brown. I also noticed that my concentration was better. OmegaRx Zone is a great book--even thought I'm not on the Zone Diet anymore because I don't like to measure everything, I do believe many of his principles, including the pharmaceutical fish oil, are very sound.

question to you experts on fish oils....what is the difference of OMEGA 3-6-9- and fish oil or cod oil? isnt omega the same as fish oil?

im not sure which one to take now....i read loads of post on both and not sure now which one to take....

Anna, regarding your fish oil and your gray hair is going brown, well now i really dont know what to say...first time i hear something like that....maybe the fish is onto something that we humans dont know...do you dye your hair and then notice that you extend the dying cause they arent as gray and it can wait? if so, i will buy a case of that fish oil...hehehe....keep us posted...you might have discovered something that might help us save on hairdressers...

thanks in advance

Omega 3s are found in fish oils and flax seeds. They are also precursors for "good" eicosanoids. Omega 6s are the precursors for "bad" eicosanoids, and most people are probably taking in too many of them. Thus, as I undderstand it, Dr. Sears does not recomend taking omega 6.

I have no idea what omega 9s do. You will have to wait for someone else to chime in on that one.

Fascinating. I can only assume that the "good" eicosanoids are changing the gene expression of the cells that are making your hair. As for your concentration, I don't think anyone can explain that one at the biological level yet...

Lans,

I have found several short hairs that are gray at the tips and dark brown at the roots! I couldn't believe it. I didn't know hair could reverse like that and become two-toned. I even had one eyebrow hair that was gray that I used to pluck all the time. Well, I forgot to pluck it and one day I looked - half was gray and half brown! Holy cow! I normally dye my hair but yes, I have been having to go to the salon less and less because of this. It's really amazing. I don't know if it's the fish oil, but I have a hunch it is.

Anna

Lanny, there are two types of fish oils, if you will. Oil that is expressed from fish livers (Cod Liver Oil), and what is called fish body oil. In general, fish body oil is that which is labeled Omega 3. Fish (body) Oil contains the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA, which are classified as Omega3's. Flaxseed oil does not contain either, but does contain the precursors which most people (not all) can convert into Omega3. There are a bunch of other essential fatty acids (various omega 6's), but it's the balance between 3 and 6 which is critical to health. For the vast majority of us, our modern diets already contain way too much Omega 6 , which is why so many nutritional gurus recommend supplementing with Omega3--to get the EFA's (essential fatty acids) back in balance. Omega 9's are also fatty acids we need, but are not considered "essential" since the human body for the most part is capable of manufacturing necessary amounts.

I took the original ZonePerfect Molecularly Distilled Omega 3 caps for years, but the last couple of months have been using Coromega packets, which tastes great and is well tolerated without a meal to buffer it. It's more expensive than ZonePerfect, but less than Dr. Sears new product.

Hey anna, that's a great result. There's no question that when I'm doing my Omega3 regularly my joints don't ache and my mood is better. I'd sure like to have a few gray hairs return to the fold, though

Lanny, does that help any, or have I just confused things more? It's really a complicated subject. There's 38 pages on EFA's in my Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements!!!

Hi BC

So basically your saying we just need Omega 3...cause we have the others in our diets and not essential for 6 + 9....

thanks

I'd say taking Omega3 is the best start. Omega6's we generally get plenty of, and Omega 9's we can manufacture.

Now, just to complicate the picture (LOL!), if we are taking substantial amounts of Omega 3 fish oils and eating a diet relatively free of processed foods, some experts (Sears-Zone and Gittleman-Fat Flush come to mind) also recommend taking very small amounts of GLA (gamma linolenic acid, an Omega6) which comes from sources like Borage Oil or Oil of Evening Primrose. Again, it's striving for balance.
