Default Blood sugar question

We are considering switching from Atkins to the South Beach diet when we reach our weight goal (few pounds to go). Husband has just mentioned it so I haven't really had time to check it out yet & see what the differences are. Do you think the South Beach diet is as good as Atkins for people with hypoglycemia? Also, which diet do you think is "healthier" over all?

I'm hypoglycemic as well and also use Atkins to control this as well as other health problems. Though I have learned to modify Atkins somewhat for my bodies needs, and still be able to loose weight.

I liked both of them, but I noticed, if I remember correctly, that on the South Beach Diet you don't have to check for Keytosis. You also get many more food choices I think. Since the book was written by person specializing in the heart, his thoughts were to get away from all the "bad" fats and bring in the good fats.

Honestly, I'm debating, myself, if I will switch to SBD in the furture. My problem is though that I have a lot of allergies and some of the things allowed on SBD, and even on Atkins on going weight loose part is the fact I can't have a lot of them allowed items. Wheat, even whole wheat, is a no no to me, rice too, that is unless I care to go through all the hassle. I can tolerate soy flour and Almond flour so far.

p.s. Dr. Atkins was a cardiologist, too!

Lisa, which one do you think is healthier? We're still a little undecided. We want more variety but don't want to gain all of our weight back. Do you start gaining the weight back if you switch (since you'd be eating more food selections)?

My doctor prescribed a diet much closer to the SBD for my hypoglycemia. So far it's working really well. The first few days were rough but once I got past that, I'm feeling really good and my blood sugar has leveled out.

Yeah, we've been "mostly" doing South Beach for a couple of weeks now and I'm doing fine on it. We like it so far.

Pianomom, honestly, I'm not really sure which diet is best, but I was considering the SBD due to it having a few more choices.

Lisa, I think I like the SBD the best. Seems like we have more choices and I don't have to keep up with a carb count for each day. (which is really nice!) The low fat stuff seems healthier. We just recently went on vacation for about a week and a half. We were very pleased when we came back and weighed. My hubby had only gained 1/2 lb. I had only gained 1 lb. Both of us lost that though and went back to our original weight by the next day! We were so afraid that we had gained while we were away. (boy, we sure were scrambling to figure out what we could eat at each restaurant, etc.! LOL!) We had a few "cheats" but were doing so much walking that I think that extra exercise kept the weight off. Good luck!

Talking Re: Blood sugar question

I've been an insulin-dependent diabetic for the last 19 years and I also have hypothyroidism. I talked to my endocrinologist 2 weeks ago about Atkins vs. South Beach and would either one be safe to do. He said that while both diets work, he would recommend South Beach due to the lower fat content and because it is a more realistic meal plan to follow in the long run. Now, I'm a carbaholic without a doubt, but I haven't really been craving my old carbs since I've been following this plan and I haven't had any episodes with low blood sugar since my doctor and I adjusted my insulin rates for my pump before I started. I'm using 30% less insulin now!!! Good luck to everyone!!!

Update: We've been maintaining on South Beach for about five months now and doing fine. My blood sugar has been very stable. I like SB better than Atkins too.
