Maureen,
First, welcome!
I would suggest looking and posting in the Diabetic Support and Encouragement Forum for more information on doing a low carb approach with diabetes. I'm sure there are many members who could give you some solid advice; I know of two moderators who are controlling their diabetes with low carb.
There is a book, "Atkins Diabetes Revolution", that may answer some questions for you and your doctor. I don't know where or if it is available in Australia, but I do know it can be purchased on Amazon.com.
Good luck to you, and post often!

Hi Trina , thank you so much for your reply,I have that book and really feel its the way to go, my doctor is against low carb eating , he himself is vegaterian, and I have decided to do the low carb any way, I have had blood tests done and will give it 3 months and then have other blood tests to compare,I am hoping to show him he is wrong , as I have friend who has had such great results , not only in losing 14kilo(aprox 30lbs)but sugar levels have dropped from 8.3 to 5.7,and she looks wonderfull,I feel I need to prove a point ,because there are many overweight women in this country town, and maybe once I have been successfull I could get a support group together, but as there is only 1 doctor here and we are 2 hours drive to nearest town so its been very difficult .I am loving this group, and have printed a few recipes and am going shopping to have all correct foods on hand, the only thing I am finding hard is no bread, I will continue to post and let you know how I am going ...........Maureen

Well, then, I'm really glad you found us. This is a terrific group of people, and will help you all they can.
Your doctor sounds like he has another agenda...being a vegetarian. The only thing I would suggest is if he has you on any medication, I would tell him in advance what you are doing, so he can be watchful for any problems. I'm afraid I'm not very well versed in diabetes, so hopefully others who are can answer your questions on that score.
Again, welcome to LCE!!
