Default Cream of Flax

I love Gram's Gourmet Cream of Flax hot cereal. But since I have sworn off all processed foods, I wonder if this cereal would still be OK.

Ingredients are Whey protein concentrate, golden flaxseed meal, wheat bran, oat fiber, freeze dried coconut, natural flavors, salt.

142 calories, 5.17g fat, 11g carb, 8g fiber, 1g sugar, 18g protein.

Still learning about all this stuff. Should I be worried about that 1g of sugar?

Thanks!

Alida,
How strict do you wish to be in your no processed foods challange??? Are we talking cave man style woe or something looser???

Personally, I would say that the high fiber in this would make it a keeper. It's not like you're having a big bowl of Atkins bars!!!

I have to agree with April Rose that you need to decide how strict you need to be with your choices. I have tried the Gram's Gourmet and I like it very much, however I waited till I was way out of induction before trying.

Now that I know how to make my own versions of these types of cereals I don't buy them anymore. In the recipes section of this website you will find under the breakfast cereal categories some really tasty options for a do-it-yourself hot breakfast cereal. The initial investment in the items needed may seem costly but if you keep the stuff in the freezer it lasts ages and it really does taste just as good as the store bought versions. Plus, you will know there is no sugar added unless you add it yourself.

April & Karen:

Thanks for your input. I love this stuff. It is such a comfort food. I haven't had any for about two weeks, but yesterday I did have a bowl. And down half a pound today.

As for having it on induction . . . I am in week 7 or 8. But because I sorta blew induction by having those darn bars (BTW, they were Atkins-approved for induction), I am a little behind in the weight loss department than a lot of you. Still, the average is about a pound a week.

I'll check those recipes. Thanks for the heads up, Karen!

Alida, The net carbs on that look fine. I wouldn't sweat the 1 gram of sugar (which may actually be coming from the coconut) and if you are losing while eating it, then keep on keepin' on. I make my own flax cereal with the following:
2 Heaping TBS. Flaxmeal (Bob's Red Mill)
2 TBS. Almond flour (meal)
1 TSP. Wheat Gluten
1/2 scoop of Carb Solutions Vanilla Shake Mix (whey protein)
1 TSP. Wheat Germ
Pinch of Salt
1/8 tsp Stevia and 2 pkts of Splenda
I add enough HOT water from the kettle to it to make it pasty. Then I add a TBS or so of whatever Davinci syrup I'm in the mood for and a splash of half and half. I sometimes add a few thawed frozen strawberries or blueberries..........YUMMERS!!!!!! I have Coconut Davinci Syrup, I'll have to try that with some strawberries. With the syrups (make sure they're sugar-free) the different flavors are endless. The advantage of making your own (besides knowing exactly what's in it) is that you can change the flavors up any time you want.

I can't remember what the net carbs are.......something like 6 or 7. It sticks with me ALL morning and also keeps the plummin' hummin'!!!!!

Barb,

Thanks for your recipe. I still have about two bags of the Gram's cereal on my shelves. Once that's gone, I'll try making your recipe. I find I do best in the AM with eggs, bacon and some veggies. May sound blah and boring, but I am OK with it. Actually, I like the routine of it!
