| Hi all! Don't know if you remember me, but I've tried LC before...stayed on it for a month...felt fabulous...and then wrecked it..fell into a pit of self loathing... and have just now managed to crawl out. Anyways, I have several questions that I was hoping someone could help with...all pertaining to eating on the go. I am in RN school right now...and constantly on the go..usually either at class or work. 1. I eat breakfast at 6am...like to eat every four hours so I don't give in to temptation...any ideas on what would I could sneak during class?? 2. Anyone tried the Atkins Advantage shakes?? Are they any good? Was thinking maybe could try one of those.. 3. How long can I keep things in a lunch box w/one of those icepack things? I leave the house at 7am and often leave class at 2pm, drive an hour, then work from 3-11. I was wondering if I was to pack, say, tuna fish or something in the morning, would it be good by that evening?? I don't wanna make myself sick.... I would really appreciate anyone's imput on these questions, as well as any other tips anyone has on quick snacks/meals. Thank you so much.. Crystal

| Hi Crystal! What satisfies you best as far as snacks? I find a cube or 2 of cheese will tide me over very well until I get to a meal time. I often eat breakfast by 5:00 a.m. so I know how important it is not to wait too long before eating again. Before I added snacks I would be eating lunch at 10:30 and dinner at 4:00. LOL Nuts also make a good snack in the single serving sizes. As far as what will keep in a lunch box all day - I would probably say no to tuna fish. But you can get those foil pouches of tuna that don't need refrigeration. Mayo should keep in a cooler a long while since it has acid in it. Cheese will keep well I think. Breads and crackers (low carb of course) may be a valid option in your case. A small bar of cream cheese is a nice addition for a snack or a meal. Of course bring things like celery sticks with ranch dip for between class munchies. |

| Crystal, Try to buy some little packs of mayo, like the kind you get in restaurants. Then take a packet of tuna, a boiled egg or 2 wrapped separately, and some sf pickle relish in a little container, then...ta-da...construct your tuna salad fresh, right before you want to eat it. This also works with the packets of chicken also. If you have the *blue ice* stuff that sits in the bottom of an insulated bag, a tossed salad with dressing in a separate container would stay fresh also. I often *brown* bag it like this also. Chopped veggies in a little baggie as well as cheese slices and deli meat will usually stay fresh for 4-6 hours. I just make sure my meat and cheese sits on top of my blue ice block. Good luck on your new career AND weight loss journey. You CAN do it! HTH Shelley

| I keep a bag of nuts in teh drawer at the office. I find they make great snacks and are very filling. I also keep boiled eggs and baby carrots in the fridge at work at all times. But they can easily go into a bag with blue ice. I have had the Advant Edge lc shakes. But now have learned I don't need them. Before switching to Atkins I started on Curves on which you have one shake a day. The fruit flavored juice type ones were awful. But the milkshake type ones were livable, I had chocolate and strawberry. I also tried the bars but found out they are a NO-NO. Of course now I have $20 worth of shakes sitting around that I don't drink. I guess if I had a bad sweet tooth I could drink one instead of a real shake.

| I'm a college student as well, which definitely complicates the whole 3 meals a day thing... and makes it difficult... It's especially difficult when you're on induction. if you're off that, Try carrying around nuts or baggies of veggies or berries. Nuts are probably the best way to go... you can easily carry them in a bag and they're very fulling.

| Celery stuffed with cream cheese or peanut butter travels well - unless it's ~really~ hot. My other on-the-run foods are hard boiled eggs, nuts, veggie strips, cheeze sticks - in other words, "the usual". I tried keeping a stash of lc shakes for snacks, but I just couldn't leave them alone - too tempting for me. For sure, stay away from the LC bars - they can cause a lot of mischief (gas, diarrhea, cravings, weight gain). Apparently, some people are okay with them but they seem to cause most people to stall in their weight loss, if nothing else.

| A few "portables" that won't spoil are beef jerky (read labels carefully, some have sugar - try jerkyusa.com for a really good one!) and those Slim Jim type beef sticks, small single-serve tins of tuna or chicken, vienna sausages, and as mentioned nuts are good - I like to buy those small cans of flavored almonds when they're on sale. Things I typically put into my insulated lunch bag with a big Blue Ice block are leftovers from dinner, hardboiled eggs, cheese sticks or those great Laughing Cow wax-wrapped individual rounds, jicama sticks, red bell pepper strips, etc. I also bought one of those plastic do-hickies that you can put salad dressing into the top part, salad in the bottom - when you're ready to eat, you press a big plunger button on top and it dispenses your dressing into the salad portion, then you shake it to coat and voila - salad! I do like the Atkins shakes if they are ice-cold OR poured into a mug and warmed in the microwave. The only two I'll touch though are the Cafe au Lait and the dark chocolate one. They don't have sugar alcohols so I've not had a problem with them. HTH! Char

| crystal- welcome back! glad to hear you're back on track. on the shakes: they're only good if they're ICE cold, to me anyway, and they're godawful expensive, i drank them in about 30 seconds, and not overly satisifying. as i could drink more than 1 in a sitting. when i have the odd urge for something like that, i now get hood carb countdown chocolate milk. much less pricy. but they can stall you or slow you down anyway. other people have lots of snack ideas, so i don't have too much to add there. i like rye-krisp crackers with cream cheese, slim jims nuts, and even an occassional apple slice (not the whole thing, though! way too high on carbs.) cheese is also nice. also pepperoni slices, peppered beef wrapped around cream cheese, and sugar free jello, carrots, califlower, brocolli pieces and ranch dip, all of which should keep well in a cooler. hang in there and remember, even if you occassionally eat off plan, as long as you're working on improving your health, you CANNOT "blow it." hang in, sister! |

| If i could do a hint on keeping your food r cold.. just keep in mind that cold sinks to bottom.. so.. try sticking 1 ice pack on bottom of bag.. then your food.. and depending how much food you have packed if you are packing for the day.. divide food w/ another ice pack.. and then topp it off w/ another.. make sure your food is REALY cold when putting it in.. if you are takeing tuna fish make sure you mix it up the night befor and refridgerate it so its COLD.. or refridge your cans or flavor fresh packs of tuna.. they have those TINY cans of tuna that work great.. for instant meals.. actualy i have bought them for my DH whom is on the road alot and has to be selfcontained (food w/ him for long time) he said he likes the tuna beacuse it makes him feel like he is haveing a meal and it dont need to be kept cool.. saves room in his mini fridge for milk cheese ect.. there are many things you can use to keep your food cool.. walmart has these mini coolers that are about the size of a regular lunch box that plug in to an outlet and acts as a refridge.. (i dont know your sorses.. but it also has a plug for car.. (not sure about battery on car.. but hey im trying here) they cost about 30 dollars.. take lots of fresh veggies for snacking.. celery, peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, ect. dont nessacarly need refridgeration. you could pick up some packets of dressing so they wont need refridgerated and rip one open when its snack time.. also.. you could freeze a bottle of water that has been opend w/ a small amount taken out (so it dont burst when freezeing ) and place it in your lunch (wrap in a paper towl beacuse it will sweat.. you will find some way to make ur meals work out... good luck and welcome back

| Thank you guys so much for these ideas! I'm 'skimming' induction this time..it is hard to stick to it when I'm on the go...so I'm allowing myself some servings of nuts and such to get by...I figure that it is better than grabbing sodas and M&m's outta the snack machines... Thanks for the welcome back as well...and although I probably won't post much I'll be lurking during study breaks...searching for tips.

| Crystal, welcome back!!!!!! Is there any way for you to keep one of those smaller coolers in your car and would you have time to run to it? I use the Atkins shakes on days when I am working a 6 or 7 hr shift and don't get a luch break. We aren't allowed to eat at our cubicles, so I "drink" my lunch. They don't stall me at all. I pack it in an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack. You've gotten some really good ideas. Raw veggies and dip comes to mind, especially if you can keep them in a cooler in your car.
