| Hello everyone! I am going camping all next week and I normally snack a lot while camping. Please give me some ideas for snacks. I do not like broccoli and cauliflower. I do have a refridgerator and microwave, etc. I will have my granddaughters and of course they will be eating chips, candy and stuff like that. That makes it even harder but I do not want to blow this diet. I am not very proud of myself because my kids gave their daddy a surprise birthday dinner last night. I did okay during the meal. I ate grilled pork chops, cabbage and deviled eggs.....but out came the cake and ice cream and I just couldn't resist. Everyone was eating it. I am so mad at myself because last Saturday I went to a wedding I didn't touch anything. I do not know what happened to me last night. I just have a hard time with willpower. Nancy |

| Nancy, As far as camping snacks go, I'd bring things like hard-boiled eggs, meat & cheese roll-ups, a bowl of coleslaw, celery stuffed with peanut butter and/or cream cheese. These are pretty basic, and I'm sure others will chime in with some more creative ideas. As for the cake, I'm still trying to recover from my step-daugher's birthday party. I made the cake and had several pieces over the last couple of days!!! I told myself I wouldn't give in, but... Maybe next time, if I prepare a LC sweet for myself before I start making/serving cake and ice cream, my will power won't let me down! (Ideally, my kids wouldn't be eating sugar - and they do eat far less than the average kid - but I still make birthday cakes and occassionally whole-grain cookies...) Have fun camping!

| Don't worry too much about the cake - just be on guard against carb cravings and drink some extra water. If you can work in a little more exercise in the next couple of days, so much the better. Celery stuffed with peanut butter is a great snack. It's high fiber, high protein, and high fat, so it's very satisfying. If you don't go overboard, Trader Joe's Flax Soy Tortilla chips are a good snack, especially with a sour cream dip, guacamole, or salsa. Of course nuts and hard cheeses are wonderful, in moderate amounts. Bell pepper strips dipped in sour cream are very nice. Beef jerky is another good snack - either look for brands with no sugar or make your own (cut marinated flank steak into strips, dry on a rack in a very low oven with the door cracked open for a couple of hours). hard boiled eggs or deviled eggs are delicious and filling. Pork rinds are good in moderation, if the salt doesn't bother you. Marinated greem beans can be very tasty - sometimes I like to roll them in a slice of ham or turkey.

| Nuts are another good snack. I love macedamia nuts and they happen to be on top of Atkins list for nuts. You just have to limit yourself. Which can be tough sometimes. Strawberries are also good in moderation. Though not good for all the time, I think the lc bars might be a good choice for this occassion. Atkins even recommends them for a quick snack if you are well into the program, again just don't go crazy. As for the cake, take teelbee's advice, lots of extra water. You will have some cravings but just try to work through them. Don't let yourself get too hungry or you might be reaching for the kids' chips.

| Don't beat yourself up over the cake--this is a way of life and cake happens now and again--on a diet you deprive yourself, in a way of life you eat waht you eat, suffer the consequences and move on. It is not an elimination diet, this is a way of living and you made a choice--I have cake now and again. . .I have ice cream now and again--if I don't make it a habit, it isn't a problem, it is when you start eating it every day that it becomes a problem. If it causes cravings--go back to lower carbs for a few days.

| those laughing cow little mini cheese things are great.. small .. easy to carry.. and they take the edge off of hunger. i like the big stuffed with jalapeno OLIVES .. (drink alot of water.. they can be salty) pickled asparagas (okay.. here too i like the spicy ones) are amazing too.. crunchy.. yum! make up some flax meal crackers..(gosh! i used to make these all the time.. i am going to have to make some tonite.. forgot how much i loved them) i just put flaxseeds in coffee grinder (or small food processer) toss in some almonds or (whatever low carb nut you like) spice em up if you like ( i use cayenne and garlic..bit of seasalt) add a bit of water..(not too much) make a thick paste.. spread in non stick pan.. cook..(not sure what temp.. i will have to check at home for recipe) when they get firmer i go back and slice em into squares.. then i just turn off the oven after several minutes and let em dry out.. break apart and enjoy! TONS of fiber.. great flavor (i tried makin em with brownsugar twin and splenda.. but i a guess i dont like fake sweet stuff) after they cool i bag em in a ziplock and take em ANYWHERE.. |

| Where do you find the flaxseeds? Thanks for all the replys. I am trying to drink more water. I haven't drank any more of the flavored waters in 2 days now. I have only drank water. I am doing much better. I try to think to drink 10 swallows about every 10 tp 15 minutes. If I get into that habit then maybe I will do it without even thinking about it. Thanks, this group is great!!!!!!! |

| nancy- just keep the water available and keep drinking it, and you WILL start to crave it. regarding the cake- don't worry about it! i am a firm believer that the self-recrimination from "cheats" are far worse than the carbs. thing is, dieting doesn't work long term. you're changing your lifestlye, your habits. so in life, there will probably be a few times that you eat something high-carb. if that triggers cravings or negative feelings or whatever, then it is a problem. if you just do it and realize that ok, well, it will take you a couple extra days to lose the next pound, then you're there, man. for me, i make sure that i have something low-carb that appeals to me during these times, and it makes it easier for me to stay on track. since i stopped thinking i could "never have" food x, y or z, and realized that ok, it's always my decision and my decisions have consequences, well, that's different. it's the choices you make day in and day out that will determine where you go with this. hang in and celebrate your successes! |

| Nancy ~ I couldn't help but note the line in your post, "I normally snack a lot while camping". I'm not sure what you mean by that exactly, but you might want to give some thought to whether camping and "mindless munching" have become linked for you. For me, breaking the automatic association between certain events and food (i.e. movie = popcorn; ball game = hot dogs; TV = chips) was one of the biggest challenges, but also one of the biggest factors in my success. I basically had to stop looking at eating as entertainment. Maybe you weren't talking about eating for no reason other than that it's part of camping, but if you were, it might be worth considering whether that's a potential problem area for you, as it was for me. In any event, there are some good suggestions above, and I hope you have good weather and a great time. Sky Atkins since 8/02 196/144/under 150 |

| Oh SKy, you are so right! My weight loss has increased since i stopped going to Sunday football or cookouts. It was constant noshing for 6 hours. But I think Nancy will do fine since it seems like she's in control of the food and not the other way around. Nancy - don't make me a liar! |

| definitely a link between certain activities of MINE and food.. we had certain things we had ALWAYS had for game days on tv.. NONE of which were healthy choices.. superbowl sunday had always been a non stop food fest in the WORST sense..i had just begun to low carb shortly before the superbowl this year.. i made so many healthy snacks ,, but to be honest... since they WERE healthy.. i got no high and crash from the things i ate.. so i didnt even EAT most of what i had made .. i DO make it through movies without the crap now.. i just eat RIGHT before i go... then i dont get anything but water.. and i carry snack sized almonds just in case i get in the mood to munch... being honest i have to say that i didnt change my eating PATTERN much.. but just the content of what i eat during these entertainment episodes.. |

| Nancy, where do you live? Do you have a Trader Joe's or a Costco or a Cubs Foods nearby? I found Soy-tein chips at Costco AND Cubs. They are soy based chips that are WONDERFUL subs for things like chips and doritoes (my former addiction) and they are great with some guacamole home-made with a bit of chopped green onion, pepper oil and lime juice in it. YUMMMMM. I get the munchies when I watch TV. I also like to camp and the last time I went, I brought ham slices with chopped olives and green onion mixed into cream cheese. I spread that on a piece of ham and roll it up. They fit nicely into a plastic container and keep well in a cooler. I also brought mixed nuts with me. I of course loaded up on Diet Rite pop. I also brought a huge ziplock of cut up veggies and dip. I had a ton of food left over when I got home and was set for the week. I didn't munch nearly as much as I thought I would. The next time I go camping I intend to pre-cook bacon, keep it in a ziplock and then just reheat it in a pan on the coleman stove. Much easier to cook that way. Alot of this stuff I've mentioned is very salty stuff, so if you bring any of that kind of thing, make sure you bring bottled water to drink. (and extra toilet paper, LOL) Have FUN and I hope you have great weather for it. Where will you be going?

| Nancy, here is the recipe for a great LC snack mix that Maggie created. This stuff is tasty, crunchy and I think non-LCers will also like it. Don't Need No Steenkin' Chex Mix |
