Default Another Newbie

Hi everyone. I am also new here. I lost 35 lbs. 5 years ago and have maintained it until this summer. I have gained 10 lbs.We had some damage to our home and we are slowly rebuilding. I've been over this a million times in my head why I feel this would have anything to do with my weight gain but my whole routine has changed since then. Less time for me I guess. It's been eating on run and snacking more. Several of my co-workers are on the South Beach diet. I thought it would be a great time to get back on track too with so many around me also trying to lose. This is a great website. I hope that I can get to know you all more and hopefully the support all around me can get me back on track as I know I can do it again. :-)

WELCOME BLONDY!

The upset of routine is defintely a big cause of a lot of problems with weight. I've felt that in a big way in my life at various times.

It will be nice to have support from people at work on the same path. The more support the better. And you will definitely get that here!

hello blondy, and welcome!

there are lots of great resources right here that should help you get started on the right track. i would recommend you check out the articles, comparing the different low carb plans for sure! it helps SO much when you pick an plan and then get the book for your plan. it provides a roadmap, helps you understand what's happening with your body, and helps you get back on track if something goes wrong. it really does help a lot!

looking forward to getting to know you.

Thanks so much for the nice welcomes. There is so much reading on LCing with so many diets to choose from. I decided on South Beach because all my co-workers are on it so I thought we would all be informed on the same one. I am also, not much of a meat eater so I thought the Atkins might not work for me. Anyways, I am enjoying reading the many tips and words of encouragement here. Thank you!

Do you suggest using the sticks for testing for ketosis? I see quite a few comments about this. Is it a suggested indicator?

Welcome, Blondy!

I am so sorry about your home. All that stress is probably the culprit for those few extra pounds. In my case, an undetected broken wrist, followed by two surgeries over the course of a year, lead to an additional 20 pounds on top of the other extra pounds I was carrying!

In your case, South Beach may be a good choice, seeing as how your friends at work are on that program. I am not sure South Beach is a ketogenic diet . . . ask your friends! I have a few friends who are on South Beach and are doing very well.

As for meat and Atkins, you can do Atkins without a lot of meat! I am sure some of our other members, who are more knowledgeable than I, will add their insights.

You have come to the best place for support and encouragement!

Welcome Blondy!!!!!

As far as I know, South Beach is almost identical to Atkins, but lower fat. I eat a lot of veggies, so overdoing meat isn't a problem. I don't think you can go wrong eating lots of low glycemic, watery veggies. Don't skimp yourself on those.

Hi Barb, I ws reading about your green tea challenge. I started drinkin green tea about two weeks ago when I started this new woe. In Canada, Tim Horton's has green tea, so it is easy to substitute it for coffee in the drive through. A lot of changes at once. In here though, it's obvious you aren't alone. Thanks for your support. :-)

welcome blondy!
whichever program YOU decide to follow... READ THE BOOK... dont just depend on someoneELSEs idea of what the program IS... it is easy to make assumptions that could be wrong with only someone else giving you the info..
i was told that my son quit doing atkins because he didnt want to eat JUST MEAT all the time.. well... thats just WRONG.. he could be eating all KINDS of wonderful things..
(sorry.. i refuse to give weightloss advice to my kids without being asked..)
i encourage you to read as much as you can.. come here often for encouragement and information...
BEST WISHES for success on your new way of eating!

Hi Kim, thanks for your welcome. I actually did read the South Beach diet book about a months before I actually started it and then have read it again since. I refer to it daily. I carry it with me in my tote bag so I always have quick reference. I find the most difficult thing for me is not being able to have rice cakes. They were a staple for my evening snack over the last 5 years I maintained by original 35 lb weight loss. I love a crunch salty snack. I've never been a nut lover so I am missing that the most. I'm sure the carvings for them will pass. :-)
thanks again ... Cathy

Cathy, have you seen Soytein Chips at your store yet? I used to be a dorito, pringle and popcorn-a-holic. I found these chips at the regular store a couple of months ago, and a couple handfuls work wonders for me when I'm REALLY craving something salty, crunchy. I dip them in anything. My SIL made a chili-cheese dip the other day that was divine. It probably wasn't the BEST thing, but I am going to try to make my own LC version. Hers was with a can of beanless chili, low-fat velveeta and a jar of salsa. I think I can make a version of it with plain old cheddar and cream cheese. It was NUMMY!!!!!!! (with the chips, I brought some with me.)

Hi Barb,
No, I haven't seen the soytein chips here in Canada. I will keep my eyes open for them. I can pass sweets easily, it's the salty snacks that I love. I bought some sunflower seeds in the shell and have a tiny pile of them. There is a lot of salty taste for a tiny bit of seed. Hopefully they are OK. I didn't see them listed in the phase 1 of South Beach. I have been faithfully drinking the green tea in place of other hot drinks. :-)

As far as I'm concerned, sunflower seeds are a good choice, for any LC WOE, especially the ones in the hulls that you have to peel. They are a HIGH cost food as far as how much energy you have to expend to get to the good stuff. So they keep you busy, satisfy your craving and are good for you.

Hopefully you will eventually find the Soytein chips up there. I know Canada gets stuff later than we get here in the US as far as LC foods. Last year I remember reading posts of Canadians that said the country was largely against LC. It seems it has finally swung the other way. I know the UK dragged its heels too. One of our regular posters, Hockeygirl, makes trips over the border once in awhile to go shopping for LC stuff. I believe she is from Toronto.
