| I'm new to the whole dieting scene, and I'm not sure what to eat for low carb dieting. I've read around and think I've come to a decent list of food i can eat. I'm trying to figure out and make meal plans on what I can eat before I start. It'll be easier for me if I have a mealplan. So i'm gonna list off some foods I plan on eatin in the low carb atkins diet, and please tell me if i list something that i cant eat for this diet. I appreciate it, thanks. - meat - eggs - cheese - mushrooms - beans - vegetables - fruit - milk - butter How many grams of carbs should one consume a day if on the Atkins diet? 25 grams? Thanks for the help, i'm tryin to figure all this out. |

| Welcome Achilles! Glad you could join us! First and foremost I advise you to read DANDR. That's Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. That's your road map and without reading it you'll easily get lost. But for a quick overview, You do a 2 week induction where carbs (net of fiber) are kept to 20 grams. Fruit and several other foods are not allowed during this period. after 2 weeks you add in 5 grams of carbs a day. Then in week 4 you add in 5 more etc. You add in each week until you stop losing and then roll back 5. Also when you say beans I hope you mean green beans. The other type like pinto beans are not allowed during OWL or induction. Milk is also not allowed as it contains lactose and anything ending in ose is a sugar. Like fructose and sucrose. though there are alternative low carb milks available. So Please Read the book. Last edited by Rob; 12-02-2004 at 11:14 AM. |

| Achilles, The best advice I can give you is this: find a specific plan that fits your tastes and lifestyle, buy the book, read it cover to cover, and follow the plan it outlines. It's really important to understand the dynamics behind low carbing before you start, both forl your success and for your health. I would highly recommend a book by Jonny Bowden called "Living the Low Carb Life: From Atkins to the Zone". He explains and compares the various low carb plans, and gives terrific advice on getting started right. The book is available at bookstores, or in your local library. Then, once you have chosen a plan that suits you, get the book for that plan, read it, and follow it. Also, I would read everything about low carb that you can, in books, online, wherever. The more informed you are, the better you can make adjustments to your plan to make it work for you. Remember, this is a lifestyle change, not a diet, and your goal is to make permanent changes to your eating and health. It's really worth it to make informed choices and do the background work. Good luck to you, and welcome to LCE!! We support each other, give advice, and celebrate each other's success. You've found a special place, and we're glad you're here.

| Good news Achilles - Butter is very much allowed! But Dr. atkins shunned margarine because of the trans fats. Owl is ongoing weight loss, it's stage 2 of 4 on the Atkins Diet |

| Achilles - welcome to the forum. You've made a great decision to take charge of your health. One step at a time it will change your life. There are many experienced people here to encourage and support you as you walk this path. One quick suggestion: Stick with natural foods and avoid manufactured low carb products, using them rarely. Most people here seem to find that they slow down weight loss. Some are misrepresented on the labels - ughhh. Second word: Eat plenty of non-starchy vegies (in other words most anything but no potatoes of any kind, no beans, except green beans are good, most root vegies are out). High fiber vegies like dark, leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. are encouraged. Enjoy your mushrooms - I was just reading that they have antioxidents. Stick with us - the support really helps. Karen

| I've been considering doing the Bernstein weight loss plan because my sister did it. It worked ok for her but is very strict. I saw on bariatricsweightloss.com that there are other medically supervised diets that are interesting. Has anyone tried any of them? |
