    Default True "Pretty.." style!!!

I had the most arrogant man come into my restuarant today! He made a comment about me being "fluffy" around the middle! Needless to say It made me SO much more commited to LC life and of course I shot back at him and told him that the only thing fluffy in our restuarant is the hair on his wifes upper lip! (The woman had a hideous mustache!) Luckily my bosses found it most amusing as they didn't like the gentleman either and were glad when he huffed and puffed his way out of the restuarant with his hairy wife in tow without ever ordering food!!! I suppose he won't be back again, and I certainly didn't get a tip! Just goes to show that you should never judge a person you don't know...because although I AM just a waitress, I go to college and take pride in my job...and I will let my hidden atitude problem resurface if you cross paths with me in a cruel way! Although what I said was equally cruel (And I am remorsful becuse I'm sure she went and spent $14.00 getting the fuzz removed after the fact!) none of it would have come about had he not opened his mouth in the first place! Remember my friends...arrogance is the tool of the ignorant! Words of wisdom from the self proclaimed "wise sage"....That's my story for the day! Hope it tickeled your funny bone!!!

Oh, Amy. I'm not sure who to feel most sorry for - you or the poor lady with the mustache. People can really be insensitive and cruel. I have often felt judged for being overweight. Years ago, I was once asked when the baby was due, it was in front of my husband and some friends. I felt so embarassed because I had quickly put on 20 lbs (and mostly in the tummy). I know he didn't mean to be hurtful to it stung.

    Amy,

    I have to agree... :(

While you were TOTALLY right to be angry and indignant that this rude and thoughtless man publicly embarrassed you (what a JERK!), I have to tell you that I do not find humor in your rebuttal. You, in turn, attacked his innocent wife.
Now, had you proceeded to find some curt retort about the offending jerk, I would probably applaud you (eye for an eye??? ), but I feel terrible for the woman who is cursed with a problem that is out of her control. Yes, she could/should wax it, but the tendency toward facial hair is a genetic trait that is beyond her control...
I say all this NOT to criticize you or make you feel bad after the fact; you seem like a genuinely sweet, and caring person -- I don't think you meant to *turn the tables* in this way.
We are ALL so sensitive to our weight issues that it sometimes makes us blind to the personal struggles of others. I have been guilty of this, myself. I guess I'm just saying, "Don't lower yourself to *their* standards. :( But now I sound "preachy" and I certainly don't mean to be that!
Anyway, just my .02 on the matter... who knows how I would have responded??? I have been similarly hurt.

I think I would have to say "Being fluffy sure beats being ugly." and leave it at that. They could agree with you secure in their belief that they aren't ugly, or take it as a shot. This would give you an "out" if they complained. You only "meant" you're glad to be only fluffy, not ugly as well. (Of course, you never hinted that they were, right?)

Yeah you're right Law...I know I shouldn't have taken it out on his wife (who was not so seemingly innocent BTW But I wanted to hit him where it hurt, if y'know what I mean!!! It's like when someone say's something about "yo' momma"..LOL! I just wanted him to feel as hurt and humiliated as I did...and although I regret it now 0 It made me feel better about what he had said, instead of hidding in the bathroom crying for the rest of my shift like I would have done before I found my self esteem! Don't worry about preaching..sometimes mouthy teems like myself need it!!! And doves! I've had 5 people this week ask me when I was due...My mom said i need something called "Posture"...whatever that is! J/K

Oh, I'm so glad you took it the way I intended... because I definitely was NOT trying to make you feel bad!

Heck, you probably handled it a lot better than I would have!
I rarely swear, but when a man publicly insulted me about my weight in front of my husband, I said a few words I would not (could not) repeat here!
I'm not proud of that at all, but you know, it's a VERY sensitive subject...
And it occurred to me after I typed that, that his wife probably wasn't that innocent.
I like Maxibee's suggestion! In fact, I have fantasized about saying just that as a retort... kind of like the infamous Winston Churchill story... but instead:
"I may be fat, you YOU, my dear sir, are UGLY.
And I can always lose weight!"

You know I acctually did use a phrase similar to that when things got to a head with an ugly girl in math class in high school and we ended up screaming at eachother...She called me a fat "you know what" and I said "yeah, I might be fat, but I can lose weight, what are you gonna do with your face"? Oh it was hilarious...she seriously looked like a white femal rupaul! That was my finest moment **dabs tear of pride from eye**

Don't you hate it when people think that you want to know their opinion of your looks?

I had just the opposite reaction when I was pregnant. As I closed in on eight months I couldn't get a seat on the bus to save my life. No one cares about giving a fat girl a seat but had I been thinner to where you could "tell" I was pregnant then I would have surely been offered one. In fact there were amny people that thought I had just gotten fatter and were shicked when they found out I had just had a baby. In fact if you look at my beginning picture I look more pregnany a year after having him than I ever did while pregnant.

    OK enough on that subject.

Some people are so rude, sorry you had to be the victim of someone else's stupidity. I do see Summer's point but faced with the same situation I may have grasped at the first thing that came to mind. Not being there I don't know. I've had a lot of strangers talk behind my back (of course just loud enough so I could hear) but not one in recent memory that actually said something to my face. Argh! Some people!

Sometimes, I think the best thing to do is smile, and keep moving. If you don't let them know they got to you, they don't get any satisfaction.

If someone said that to me, I'd probably come back with some other remark about me...not them, such as, "Hey, no comments about the fluff. It's taken me XX years and a lot of heavy hand to mouth lifting to get this way." But then, I'm 45 and have had a long time to learn to laugh at myself.
