    Default new sweetener syrup

    I found a new sweetener that's a syrup. It's called BlueOpium.
    no sugar. only sugar alcohols.

is this okay for a low carb diet?

    their website is blueopium.com

I couldn't find the ingredient list on the blueopium website. Many (not all) low carbers find that most sugar alcohols, especially maltitol, can stall weight loss and/or cause digestive upset. There is one sugar alcohol seems to be less problematic than others, erythritol.

Even if I wasn't so leery about sugar alcohols, at $90/cup - only enough make 56 drinks, that BlueOpium is way, way, way too expensive.

Have you tried the sugarfree Da Vinci or Torani syrups - sweetened with Splenda? Splenda is not a sugar alcohol, and seems to work well for most people. You can find those at $4 to $8 for a 750 ml (about 3 cups) bottle. It takes about a 1/2 TBS of those to sweeten a drink, so a bottle is enough to sweeten 32 drinks. Or, you can get much more concentrated liquid Splenda from www.locarber.com or www.sweetzfree.com. Those take just a few drops to sweeten a drink.

Beautiful bottle...but man, at that price you'd think they're selling real opium!

Josh, unless you've recently won the lottery and are looking for new things to try, I'd follow Teel's suggestion to stick with Splenda sweetened syrups such as DaVinci or Torani syrups. If you're just looking for a sweetener, you might try Splenda or a mix of SteviaPlus and Splenda or SweetnLow, which is what I use most often. (SteviaPlus isn't all that sweet on it's own but mixed with a little Splenda or Sweet'N'Low, the sweetness really comes out. Best of all, it has 1 gram of fiber.)

I'm learning to use Splenda in cooking as it doesn't lose it's sweetness or get bitter when cooked the way S'N'L does, but I still prefer S'N'L for iced tea.

Sugar alcohols are to me like Kryptonite is to Superman. Maybe that is a bad analogy. Kryptonite doesn't send Superman running to the restroom! LOL!
