Smilyn,

Welcome to LCE
I don't know of any members that are doing the Schwartzbein plan at this time. I know there are several members/moderators who have read her books, so maybe one of them will happen by and can give you some help. Sorry, I cannot. Perhaps this will help?

Again, welcome to LCE. I hope you find what's right for you.

Thanks Shelley! I was all over that site last night, but I was hoping to find some real people to discuss this with. I left that site more confused than I was when I got there, LOL! I'll manage. I am reading the book and figuring that any change is one in the right direction, so I am trying to not be alpha about it and let it grow! That's a change in itself for someone like me who always wants to "do it right!"

Thanks again... Smilyn

Hi to everyone. yes I am new to this forum and am looking forward to getting to know people who are like me, sick and tired of being fat and unhealthy!!! About 5 years ago I had lost 40 pounds by sticking to a low carb plan and I felt great. Then two more kids later I am bigger!!! I don't like not having energy and a low self esteem. I want to lose about 50 pounds. The first day of my lifestyle change was about 3 days ago. I found this website because I was trying to find some recipes. I am glad that I found you guys!!! If you have any tips for me or just want to tell me about your experiences they are welcomed.:jump:

Welcome Kim. Are you following any particular low carb plan?

I have done the Atkins before so I think I am going to stick with that. I really liked it before so I hope it brings me the results again. I want to regain my energy so my kids don't make me an old woman too soon in my life. It is hard keeping up with them. What are you doing, Henry? Maybe you can throw some tips my way if you have any good ones?! I work 10:30 pm to 7:15 am and I find myself needing to snack all night but sometimes I get tired of the same old stuff. Thank you for your feedback!!

Kim, I am following the Atkins approach. Are you snacking all night because you are hungry? Working nights is tough on creating an eating schedule. When I worked nights, a lot of years ago, I would get home and have an early breakfast with my family and then go to bed. When I got up in the afternoon, I would have a snack to carry me through to dinner with the family before going to work at 10:00pm. I would then have a "lunch" break about 2:00 am and have what was then a "normal" lunch. Do you have access to a refrigerator or kitchen at work for you snacks? Since I started Atkins over 3 years ago, I have not felt the urge to snack much. However, there are lots of things that would work for snacks so you should never be bored. What are you currently doing for snacks?

Welcome, Kim.

Working third shift is not easy. Well, it wasn't for me, anyway. I did it many years ago and I wasn't trying to change my way of eating at the time. I did find myself following an eating pattern similar to what Henry describes.

Tell us more about your situation, if you like.

In any case, make yourself at home.

I am hungry at night. After work I go home and get the kids on the bus then go to sleep and so I really don't eat all that much until I eat some supper. At work I get hungry and so I just snack on beef sticks sunflower seeds. I figured if I keep my mouth busy with the stuff you have to chew for a while it would be better. I do have a fridge and microwave. I also have been drinking a lot of coffee lately is it true that coffee is not good for this diet?

It seems to me that one of the things you must try to do is get on a regular eating pattern that works with your lifestyle. That does not mean necessarily eating 3 meals a day. Some people have better success with 4-5 small meals spread out, rather than the usual 3 meals. However, I would discourage trying to rely simply on snacking to get you through the night. Remember, that low/controlled carb eating is all about developing healthy eating patterns that can sustain you throughout your life. Another thing is that if you are hungry, you should eat. However, if you are eating meals on a regular pattern, your hunger pangs should be greatly reduced. If you need a snack to get you to your next meal, then you might try something liked deviled eggs, cheese, celery, plain or stuffed with cream cheese, olives, leftover meats from prior meals, perhaps with a little mustard for a tang. Seeds and nuts can be tricky, so I would stay away from them. Do you take a "lunch" to eat in the middle of your shift? If not, you should. I have a microwave and refrigerator at work too and I manage to have good low carb friendly meals, it just takes a little planning and preparation to make it work. If you look at the 5 a day low carb club thread, you will see my daily menu's. Most are induction friendly, or can be with minor tweaks. I usually fix dishes on the weekend that I can take leftovers as lunch the next week. That really helps and keeps me eating on schedule and cuts down on the urge to snack.

I guess I should start making food and taking to work to keep me filled like you said. So far I had lost five pounds. My problem is when I don't see a change in my body I get discouraged. Sometimes I think that it should just melt off. I play such a mental game with myself that is how I get defeated. Any tips for how I can keep my brain in play during my loss? I am going to get some of the things you suggested. Before when I was on the Atkins I cooked all the time and did well. Of course I was not on third shift so I had a good eating schedule so I will design another schedule to eat by. I am going to checkout some recipes and go from there. Thanks for listening.

When you have somewhat more to lose, 5 lbs sometimes doesn't seem like much, but soon you'll be losing more, and then one day you'll notice that your pants are a little loose, that your shoes fit better, your blouse doesn't gape, etc. And then it will dawn on you that, yes, you are smaller! When you get closer to goal, 5 lbs will seem like a lot! It's all relative.

Henry's absolutely right, you have to have a meal, not just snacks. Snacks are just to dull the hunger until your next meal, not a substitute.

BTW, where is Tiro? I was born and raised in Medina County, until we moved to Texas in 1979. That's about 25 miles west of Akron.

Tiro is about 20 mins from mansfield. It is a small dinky town but I live right on the outskirts of Tiro. I can tell that I am doing well with this diet. I did look up some recipes and found some that I like. Nita, what are you doing and your progress? I do know that when I eat a lot of pasta bread ect... I feel terrible. But this low carb makes me feel great. Thank you for your reply now I know I have people to talk to and get tips from.

Hi, Kim! Welcome to the board. I happen to live in Arlington....and I'm quite sure you know where that is in relationship to Mansfield. My DD goes to MISD! LOL!

My advice (not that I'm qualified to give any!): don't give up.....ever!

Well hello maxibee Thank you. Wow I can't believe how trick or treating can really be hard. I messed up yesterday but I am getting back on track. Today I had the bright idea of writing little notes on my bathroom mirror to help me stay positive. Let's hope it works!!!! My son thinks it's pretty at least because I used glitter. At least he likes it. Congrats on the weight you have lost!!!!! I WILL be joining on the weight loss band wagon soon!!!

Hello everybody,
it is so nice to find somewhere where everybody is so kind and helpful. i too looked in the mirror recently and couldn't believe how fat i have got. i am physically fit yet seem to pile on the weight around my stomach and boobs, so here i am wanting to lose it and keep it off this time....

i have tried it before and it worked but its so easy to slip back into old habits. anyway i started on monday and so far so good (except for 2 gin and slim line tonics!). my problem is that i am in London on a course and so eating out- steak, bacon, eggs etc. however i am hungary between meals- what do people eat for a snack?

Hopefully 'chat' soon,

x
