Default starting atkins, used to be raw

Hello. I used to be a raw foodist but instead of getting healthier, I gained 12 pounds and suffered a broken foot and tooth problems, not to mention great fatigue! I know I need more protein in my diet. I am desperate to lose weight and feel better. My dr. said the broken foot (which I got just by walking) was from brittle bones. I'm only almost 42. I started today not great, I had a 15 carb flax cereal for breakfast but lunch is fish and salad. I know I'm already too high carbs but the rest of the day will improve. I look forward to this group.

Welcome!

Which plan are you following? Whatever one you are they should have some suggestions for foods to start out with and how to add foods.

Sorry to hear about your health problems (brittle bones) from past diets. I supplement with a multivitamin and get in my veggies and have had no problems as of yet with this program...I'm on Atkins. I am actually looking forward to the health fair so I can get my blood levels checked.

My energy level with this way of eating is up beyond what I could have hoped for. I feel much better overall as well. I think you'll like it once you get detoxed from the carbs in a week or so. If you feel sluggish in the beginning that is normal. You're using up the carbs still in your system. Soon enough the carb cravings and tired feelings will subside.

I'm sure you'll do great.

Hi and welcome, I maybe wrong but you appear to be winging this without reading up the appropriate book for which plan you choose to follow. Knowledge and education will be one of your greatest allies with this woe. Most plans ive read dont allow cereal during induction. You really need to get most of your carbs from veggies, especially during induction, its really important to this right if you truly want to be successful.

Go read up, and we're here anytime you may need us.

Welcome, Idrial.

I hope you'll take the advice above and pick a plan and then carefully read the book that goes with it. This will be your road map.

You'll be interested to know that I have gained density in my bones every year that I've been on this way of eating with no calcium supplementation beyond what's in my one-a-day carb smart vitamins. I've gone from "the bones of a 72 year old" to normal for my age over the last six years.

Hope you'll make yourself at home here.

WELCOME! I hope that you will find all the help you need here & that you will find success with this woe (way of eating).

I have to agree that you need to pick a low-carb plan and read the book.
With this woe, *KNOWLEDGE is power* and the more you understand about how this way of eating works, the more freedom and leverage you have. There are quite a number of plans out there and certainly one that will suit your lifestyle/personal preferences. I wish you the best, whichever plan you choose!

Idrial, please don't take offense at what advice has been offered.

Once you're here for a while, you'll see that a lot of new folks use "atkins" and "low carb" interchangeably, have not actually chosen a plan - in fact, have done no investigation at all.

It's great that you've read the book, that's the best way to begin any nutritional program. I think you'll find a lot of support and help here. Good luck on your induction!

Keep us posted.

Idrial, I asked because I thought (as Maggie said) that you were doing low carb but had not read the Atkins book because you said "I started today" but then had flax cereal for breakfast. Atkins has quite strict rules for induction. Veggies, meats, eggs and limited dairy. You do not eat flax cereal on induction whatsoever. After you are done and begin adding additional foods in the recommended order listed in Atkins then you can add the cereal. I in fact had cereal with hood dairy beverage this morning.

You should have two cups salad veggies and one cup other veggies (from Atkins List) every day during induction or three cups salad veggies. You should eat no more than 4 ounces cheese. But you should eat enough to keep yourself full. Also you'll find all the lists you need for induction veggies and salad type veggies.

Again, welcome and good luck.

Idrial: I've been eating the Atkins way of life for two years and lost 30 of the 40 pounds I wanted to lose. While I had read to get started as you have, I found that in order to follow the plan I needed to add more protein than recommended. I did this with cheese and eggs and nuts. I've never been a big veggie eater, but did push (and continue to) salad. The biggest benefit in losing for me, in addition to the food choices, is the water. I significantly added to the 8 glasses recommended by most diets. I drink a gallon a day. It not only contributes to much better skin and health, but also gets the weight off.

Please know that we are here to support you and not to direct you. I have found that Atkins works for me as I tweak it to suit my needs and loss. You too will find that YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary). Each of us is different. Some have to be rigid about following Dr. Atkins instructions. Some of us are not so rigid and still lose at a pace that is satisfying.

Good luck to you. And welcome to the Board. Come back often and post often. It is the biggest factor in my loss!

Idrial,

Please do not be so testy. :(
This is a NICE board, not one of those catty, hateful boards. We were only trying to help.
As Maggie noted, A LOT of people say "starting ATKINS" when all they really mean is "starting low-carb." I apologize if it seemed like we were patronizing you.

I wish you well,
Summer
