I found this chat transcript at Atkins.com, a chat they had with the good Doctor. I thought this might be useful to you. Cholesterol Chat with Dr. Atkins

Here's another article at Atkins about blood lipid levels. Meaningful Tests: Blood Lipids Although, these numbers are the system they use in the US, your doctor might be familiar with this system of quantifying lipid levels.

If you go to www.atkins.com and do a search on "cholesterol" a HUGE number of articles will pop up. It's mind boggling how many they have. The search field and button is in the upper right hand corner of the page.

Hi Barb,

Here is my update regarding my cholestrol and my Dr.

When i walked into the surgery she said i looked great and noticed the weight loss, i told her i was on Atkins, i was surprised that she didnt react, i reminded her of the years that i did low fat and got nowhere, i asked her opinion on Atkins but she first asked me what i was eating i gave her my daily menu and explained that i dont gorg on fat all day, she said my menu looked very healthy and keep it in moderation, so i didnt get into a debate because i got the feeling that she didnt want to comit herself but at the same time she didnt knock Atkins.

I told her that i did not want to go back on Lipitor that i would get cholestrol down naturally but she asked me to just take it for 6 weeks and get blood checked again.

I won't be back online again until net weekend Pain in the neck
I will browse around the site for a while now to see if i can get some tips.

Talk later,

Bron?

Hi again Barb,

I'm not sure if i've asked you this before, the only sugar free Jelly (Jello) i can get here is called "Birds" sugar free Jelly.

Nutrition information per serving as made up- 1/2 pint boiling water+ 1/2 pint cold water +12g sachet Jelly- 0.4g carbs of which sugars 0.1g, no sugar is added to the product just sweetners.
Do you think this Jelly is ok for me?

Bron?

Brona', sounds like your Dr. is softening on the LC idea. Maybe she's read some recent research on it herself. That's very encouraging. Did she say anything about your HDL and LDL ratios?

That jelly sounds okay, but I'm not sure what "sachet" jelly is. What sweetener does it use? It's too bad you can't find a sugar-free drink mix that's concentrated like we have here (Kool-aid) and can therefore make your own. But, if it's sugar-free........I would say go ahead and have it.

Hi Barb,

Sachet Jelly is Jelly in small packets, we call them sachet's

I did ask my Dr to exlain about my results but i knew by her that she didn't want to take the time to leave her office and go to reception office to look it up.

I am going back in 6 weeks time for another check on my blood so fingers crossed it might have lowered a bit.

Talk at the weekend.

Bron?

Oh okay, so it just means it a small packet. Gotcha.

Hrrumph. That makes me mad when doctors won't take the time with their patients. Does she have a receptionist that could look it up for you?

Have a good week.

I hate it to when doctors won't talk to you. i had one that was so rude because of my weight that i finally left him and found a great doc who will sit down and talk with me,. he is the one who told me about low carb in the first place.
said it would help me lose weight and help my diabeties to...and it has.
If you are not sastified with your doc just find a new one to go to. There are to many good doctors out there to, they are not all bad but you have to look for the good ones these days....

Hello Barb and everyone,

I have'nt been around much over the last few weeks because we had some bad news, my husband's brother died suddenly two weeks ago and then last Saturday our next door neighbour of 30 years died suddenly, John was only 56 and a very dear friend, we are very sad over all this and to be honest i don't know how i didn't break the diet, just wanted to explain.

I have a few questions when you can get around to answer them.
I'd like a change for breakfast, i'm on my 5th week ( i think ) on Atkins, can i eat Wheat Germ, Oat Bran, Wheat Bran, i've been looking at Maggie's Breakfast Cereal and your Nutty Cereal?

Can you tell me what Wheat Gluten is?

To make a long story short, i'm doing fine, will tell you all later.

Many thanks to all for your help,

Bron?

Oh Brona', I'm so sorry for your loss. Take care of yourself through all of this. Thanks for letting me know what's been going on with you. Sending you {{{{HUGS}}}}.

Yes, you can have any type of bran you want with the cereal. Are you able to find flaxmeal easily? How about almond flour? You could grind your own almonds to make meal. I love it in that cereal. And try to find soy protein ISOLATE, OR you can use whey protein Isolate too, if you can find that.

Wheat Gluten is the protein part of the wheat kernel and is very low carb, but can cause intestinal problems in some people. I use it in "cake" and "cookie" recipes, as well as in pancakes. It's the part of the wheat that causes air bubbles to form in cakes and breads. It's kind of like the "glue" part of wheat flour. It's what makes bread dough rubbery and stretchy.

Hang in there and let me know if I can help you with any of these ingredients.
