| Hope everyone is having a good week, Was hoping someone can explaine something which is probably deathly simple! Was looking at some Russell Stover low carb chocolate i managed to find (LC not that big in Scotland....you can have low fat anything you like though grrr!) and the front of the package says 0.5 net carbs. But when i look at the NI at the back it says 7.4g carbs. Should i be deducting something? Cos i havnt been i've only been counting the total amount of carbs. Cant wait to try it, it's my treat for when i finish inductions...yummy!! |

| You can pretty much always deduct the fiber carbs - but the candy companies (and other) will deduct the sugar alcohols - which most of us don't. YMMV (your mileage may vary) is the key on these. Some people have digestive problems with the sugar alcohols - others digest it just like sugar (me) - which means I still get the carbs. When you get further along, you can give it a try - but don't be surprised if it either stalls you, or if you have more than a serving, gives you 'bathroom' problems. You are better off counting full carbs less fiber. Count the candies including the 'sugar alcohols' that they use so much in the advertising.

| Mary Kay is right. The safest way to find your net carbs is to take TOTAL CARBS and subtract only FIBER. Everything else, as Mary Kay explained, is suspect to one degree or another.

| Thanks! I was getting quite confused but that makes sense! I'll keep it stored away under "emergencies only"! Thats a bit of false advertising, i should have known it was too good to be true! Not feeling as bad as i expected, my mouth feels a bit yucky but i have plenty of energy and not hungry at all. It's working!! |

| Ah! I remember Yucky Mouth! I would run around all day trying to find something I could eat or drink that would get rid of the taste. Alas, it just has to run its course. If I recall, it doesn't last too long. Just keep drinking your water. That will help. As for the LC candies, as mentioned above, do keep them for an occasional treat after Induction. Sugar alcohols can be a problem to some people. And to make matters more confusing, some SA are worse than others in the bathroom department. I think it is because they are not fully digested by the stomach, so they are "evicted" with a lot of stomach distress. However, one sugar alcohol, Erythritol is better in that respect. I have found the Hershey's 1 Carb bar to be very good. There is another candy bar out there, which is sometimes hard to find called "At Last." That one's pretty good, too. I can go for weeks without even thinking about these things. But then, all of a sudden, I WANT one. That's when I stop and think about choices. And usually, I will choose to have a LC candy bar! This is not a race. This way of eating is all about being able to eat lower carb for life. And what's life without chocolate?!

| LOL!!! Im not sure it's quite as disgusting as that....well on second thoughts!! KC, i totally agree, life is about choices, and sometimes you just have to give into a craving...but only once in a while. I was reading another post were someone was freaking out because they ate cheese topping off a pizza and was really worried that the pizza sauce on the cheese would have carbs. My thinking would have been "hey...i didnt eat the pizza base, im have super human will power!!!" Last edited by weestar; 02-22-2005 at 10:11 AM. |

| You're right, Weestar. And at least the pizza sauce (for the few more carbs it may have) is made from tomatoes which are a great source of phytonutrients. I'd just as soon "overdo" on tomatoes as white flour.

| Weestar, be careful with chocolates... Russell Stover chocolates typically include quite a bit of maltitol, which gives many people a bad tummy ache, gas, and "the runs". I would suggest you only eat them when you are going to be home (preferrably alone, LOL!) - at least untill you know how they affect you. This is a lesson I seem to have to learn over and over! I bought a box of Hershey's truffles on sale after Valentines. The ingredients listed erythritol as the main sweetener with some sucralose listed, too. Those 2 alternative sweetners are generally okay. So I thought the candy would be "safe". But, there was also something called polyglycitol, which I'd never heard of before. I assumed that was a filler, like polydextrose, which is generally okay, too. The first day I ate 4 and didn't notice much. The next day I ate 2 and had a bad tummy ache. So, I looked up polyglycitol glycitol and discovered it is a blend of sugar alcohols - mainly maltitol and sorbitol! I think the reason I didn't notice a reaction the first day was because I ate the candy after a meal and that buffered it. The second day, I grabbed two as a snack on an empty stomach - just before I left the house. Big mistake. We had to skip going to the movies as I couldn't sit through a show with such gastric distress.
