| Hi Im new here i have recently found out that i have kidney stones 2 ratcher large ones, the pain is excruitiating. Has anyone here had them before? Lynn |

| Dear Lynn: I'm sorry to hear about your stones: I remember when my dad had them, he cried like a baby. It is indeed a very painful condition, and nothing to make light of. I do want to point out the following, however: Although after a six WEEK study, researchers concluded that a high protein diet might lead to kidney stones and other problems, http://www2.ajkd.org/scripts/om.dll/...a34504&nav=abs (though of course, six weeks is too short a time for stones to develop, I believe) a longer, six month study didn't show any association between being in ketosis and the formation of kidney stones or impaired renal function: http://www.nature.com/cgi-taf/DynaPa.../0801048a.html And in a review of 11 years worth of data we have this: http://www.annals.org/cgi/content/abstract/138/6/460 (funded by the NIH, BTW) which doesn't speak directly to kidney stones, but does talk about renal function in general. Just in case you were wondering if your kidney stones are associated with a low carb diet? | I had one a few months ago. Nasty business. Kidney stones are a recurring thing for some people. It was my second bout with it. Doctors will tell you that the best way to prevent another one is to drink lots of water (as Andrea wisely pointed out.) This last time, I didn't want to go to emergency because I have no insurance and, besides, I hated the hospital experience the first time, so I tried to bite the bullet and walk it off at home. That's the other thing they tell you at emergency -- walk so you can pass the stone more quickly. I thought there would be more useful info about the causes of kidney stones on the web than there is. There are dueling schools of thought about what causes calcium-based kidney stones. Some medical experts think it's excess calcium in the diet, some think it's oxalic acid in green foods, some think it's excessive protein, some think it's related to low levels of citrate. There is agreement that water is a good preventative. Some doctors will prescribe potassium citrate to prevent kidney stones. Potassium citrate is a commonplace and cheap blood pressure medicine and diuretic.

| Are you seeing a doctor about this? I have not had ANY kidney problems in the 2 yrs I have been LCing.

| Same here, Barb. In fact, I haven't had ANY kidney problems at all since low carbing, and I did (stones, infections, etc) for years. I think the best statement I have ever read about this came from the Drs. Eades, authors of "Protein Power". They said (and I am paraphrasing) that if it were true that a diet high in protein caused kidney problems, that bodybuilders, who eat a diet higher in protein than anyone, would be lined up around the block at dialysis centers.

| My aunt had kidney stone issues....but they say once you form stones, you will always be a stone former. She had gallstones prior to.... my mother had kidney stones too......they got so severe that they put her into a sonic sauna type thing and smashed the stones up with sound.... I read a few articles on low carb and kidney stones....there is no true proof that they are deffinately linked....one thing people make mistakes with, they take calcium supplements whilst on a diet...overdosing on calcium does form renal calculi....kidney stones....it is just calcium deposites.....so if you are taking supplements...stop...talk to your doctor about this.....and drink tons of water....... |

| No one should be recommending anyone here to stop taking any kind of supplements or meds. That should be entirely up to the patient and their own physicians.

| FWIW... I worked for a woman whose father was a urologist. He advised leaning forward while peeing to help pass kidney stones. Er..., on relfection, I suspect this applied to men only. Anyway, she said her husband tried it and it worked.

| you're right, sorry for suggesting it. I am thinking in retrospect of my mother. She was taking Calcium plus consuming calcium. It was an OD of calcium that caused renal calculi for her.... acutally i learned that leaning forward while voiding is helpful with women too. If you lean forward, it forces all urine to exit, I try this and it works. I do it because I have a small bladder and if I do not empty all contents out this way, it backflows into the kidneys and causes some pain. |
