Question Do calories or amount of food really matter.

I am an Old Newbie, I mean I was here a long time ago, lol..
Anyway, I started a little over a week ago and at first lost 4 pounds and now I'm gaining it back. My appetite has slowed a lot, so do you really think it is because I am not eating enough? or having enough calories? I have a lot to lose, so its not because of that. I am 176 now and I am only 5'3. I would be happy to post a couple of days of menus if someone would like to help me. THANK YOU SO MUCH

Oh, this is an easy one ~ it's the bars, it's the bars, it's the bars. Stick to real food, as fresh and unprocessed as possible, and you'll see things get moving again.

Really, but it says you can have them during induction? AND they are soooo easy. I have 4 kids and it is so easy to grab those? they are the morning start bars? what about the shakes, i have a lot of those and enjoy them in the afternoons? wahhhhh... *S*

Newer Atkins promotes the bars and 'fake foods' they produce. Earlier Atkins says to stick with whole natural foods. (I think the newer Atkins group is out to sell the products)

Many on these boards have found the bars and produced shortcuts to be a real problem in the plan as it prevents loss, and may even produce a gain.

Some have no problem with the shakes, but they are still a shortcut and you should be concentrating on whole, natural, foods.

I would eliminate the bars as well. You should be eating at least 2 cups of salad veggies and another cup of other allowed veggies or 3 cups of salad veggies. It looked like you might be shorting yourself on veggies.

I agree with whats already been posted. Ditch the bars. BUt I do use the shakes. They dont' contain sugar alcohols and someitmes you just need something fast, easy and filling. Please do eat more veggies though!

Good luck!

I found even the shakes tended to give me sweets cravings and I seriously wanted another as soon as I finished the first. It would have to be a real emergency for me to eat one now.

Hard boiled egss and celery stuffed with cheese are quick and easy alternatives to bars and shakes.

Some of your protein portions look a little big for a fellow shortie, unless you are very active throughout the day. Excess protein gets converted to glucose, so consuming more than your body needs can be a problem. Eating veggies earlier in the day might help you feel full. E.g., instead of 3 eggs and 3 bacon, try a 2 egg omlet filled with cooked zucchini or sauteed squash, or whatever other veggies you like. Mushrooms seem to go very well in an omlet.

I like cream in my coffee, too. However, after induction, I switched to half-n-half, which is also allowed. The calorie saving is huge, without sacrificing much in taste.

I'm also 5'3. As much as I wish otherwise, calories do count over the long term. However, I also believe in the "metabolic advantage" of low-carb. Those 1200 low-fat calories just don't do it for me! But 1600 low-carb calories adds up to a lot of good food, and I've been successfully losing weight. (With exercise too.)

as much as we hate to admit it, even on Atkins, some of us have to watch calories. I don't mean going to the extreme, like some of the 'other' diets, but for instance... Sausage has high carbs, so I seldom eat it... I think our bodies are all different.. where one persons body can burn off calories quickly, another one has to watch them to a certain extent.. what I mean by that is not be calorie concious.. just be aware of where the high calories are coming from and watch those items in your diet.

I agree...........those bars contain glycerine and obviously your body is metabolizing it as if it were REAL sugar.

I use the shakes with NO dire effects. In fact, lately I have been blending in unsweetened cocoa powder and a packet of splenda and 1/8 tsp. of stevia into mine for an enhanced version. 1 TBS. of cocoa powder will add 1 net carb to your shake if you do that, and the splenda packet will add another, so if you do this, add 2 net carbs to your daily allotment.

when I drink coffee I add half and half too.

I drink GREEN TEA!!!! and lots of water. How's your water consumption?

The Atkins Metobolic Advantage means that your body is converting protein to the glucose your eyes, brain and kidneys need. But this makes your metabolism rev up, in other words, your body has to work harder to convert it. That's the "Advantage." Don't be too worried about protein at this point. It converts to about 50% glucose. But your organs that rely on it will use it up.

I consume huge quantities of heavy cream. I just now called Trader Joe's and asked them to set aside five bottles for me. The more cream I consume, the thinner I get. Strange, isn't it?

My sister did the bars and shakes and gained weight. Think of the 'carb craze' market right now. Even the Atkins stores are promoting their items as SAFE etc. Think of the premise of atkins to begin with. All NATURAL foods. Even those doing their ACE find it hard to ingest the bars without desturbing their 'scale'. Stick to nature, avoid the gimicky garbage. For an indulgent treat, try the faux cheese cake, and the no fail jello if you can eat that. (i cannot). For a fast breakfast, hard boil some eggs, do a bunch of them and pack them with some cheese. OR make egg salad and eat it from the dish. That's what i do. I have four daughters and go to college full time. I find short cuts any which way. Another quickie are taking slices of meat, roast beef, turkey, ham and spreading cream cheese on the slice and rolling it up. Makes a decent breakfast and u pack it the night before and it's easy!
