| Hello everyone, this is my first post. :o I have been on Induction for two weeks and today I bought some walnuts. I believe that after two weeks on Induction I am allowed to add one quarter cup of nuts per day, is this right or am I confused with something else? |

| Hello Almene and welcome to the boards! You will find people here very friendly and supportive, as well as the veterans here giving great advice. As to having walnuts after induction, according to DANDR (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution) you are permitted to consume nuts after induction. However, word of caution, I would not eat nuts every day until you see how they will affect you. Many people find that nuts can stall. I don't know what 1/4 cup of walnuts equates to, but generally I have no more than 1 ounce of nuts, and maybe once per week.... well, that was until I became addicted to them and craved them excessively.... If I begin to crave a food, I eliminate it from this WOE. Perhaps, later I will readd them in, but the whole purpose of this WOE is to rid yourself of cravings.... period. In any event, 1 ounce of walnuts has about 4.2 grams of carbs.... minus the fiber, which leaves about 2. If your carb allowance will allow the healthy snack, I say go for it... just tread water with caution until you see how it will effect you. That's generally the rule of thumb on all foods after induction. Good luck and I hope you will post often. Rhonda |

| Technically, yes you can add in a 1/4 cup of nuts. This would up your carb intake by about 5 grams. At this point however you might want to another serving of vegetables. If you have your copy of DANDR go to the chapter on Ongoing Weightloss and find the carbohydrate ladder. This is the order that Dr. Atkins recommends that carbs be added back into the diet.

| Thanks for your advice and welcome. I am concerned as my weight loss is very slow and I don't want to stall, however, I have less than 20 pounds to lose so I understand that I will go about it slowly. Can I just say that I LOVE my new low carb lifestyle, I cannot wait to get to maintenance. I thought it would be difficult for me as I was vegetarian for over 10 years and I also have a high intolerance to wheat and dairy. However, I am slowly trying to accustom myself to the taste of meat as it is a natural product (I was a veggie because I didn't like the taste), I am also carefully introducing cheese and cream, which are not so bad as it was mostly cheese that gave me problems. If nuts should only be consumed once or twice a week, does that mean that you don't recommend almind flour for baking with? I am really looking forward to baking some low carb products, as I have been baking wheat free products for years with varying degrees of success and laughter. |

| From a former vegetarian go slowly and in very small quantities as you reintroduce meat. Stick to fish or chicken at first. It may save you a lot of bodily distress. If you are intolarent of wheat and dairy I would not reintroduce these as that may cause a significant stall. I personally avoid wheat products except for the bran portion.

| When I first read the subject line I thought, 2 weeks that's pretty good... Cause I was going nuts on the third day of Induction. Sorry, I had to say that. LOL Welcome to the boards Almene! |

| I waited quite a while to add nuts back. I love nuts (all except walnuts, which give me mouth sores and Brazil nuts, which just taste blah). I love baked goods made with nut flours - pancakes, muffins, 3-minute Chocolate Cake, Maggie's Biscotti, and so many other good things. But, even in maintenance, I find I cannot eat nuts daily (without gaining weight). Well, if I exercised like crazy every day, maybe I could eat nuts every day.

| Thanks everyone! I've not actually come off Induction yet, I just remember reading in the book that if you stayed in Induction after 2 weeks you could add some nuts, you would still need to stay on 20 carbs and under so they would come within this allowance. |

| actually, after induction you start adding in foods, yes, but you don't stay at 20 carbs. probably would be a good idea to review that section of your book as you prepare for finishing up induction... |

| I know, but I am still in Induction, what I think I understood was that if you decided to stay in Induction longer than two weeks you can have nuts, maybe I misread. |

| If you are eating nuts, then by definition you are no longer in induction. I understand what you are asking, but if you add nuts in and still keep your cabs under 20, then what must you be omitting?? Veggies, and that won't work. Induction, no matter how long you stay in it, the rules are the same. They don't change after the 2 weeks. Induction means the 20 carb level and the restrictions. Coming out of it, we are to add in carbs in a certain order, called the carbohydrate ladder. 5 grams at a time, we add in first, more veggies for a week. If we are still losing, we add in fresh cheeses for a week. I believe nuts are after that and then maybe berries. I don't have my book right in front of me. The thing is that lets say you do this right, then by the time you add in nuts, you are at 35 grams a day. For some of us who are more metabolically challenged than others, this is too many carbs to lose, so nuts and berries have to be an occasional splurge rather than a regular part of the daily diet. Just my 2 cents. Good luck and welcome!

| Ahhh OK, well I should check my reading then. I found a recipie on the Internet which claimed it was suitable for Induction but used almond flour, so I guess I should wait on that one then? |

| ahhhhh, i see where you're going now. you want to have your nuts, but continue to lose at the rate of induction, right? ummm, well, i hate to tell you this, but it probably won't work that way, even if you do keep your carb count low. there are certain foods that, regardless of the carb count, will simply slow people's losses down. and i've seen this with nuts many times. nuts are very high calorie, and while usually you don't have to watch the calories much with low-carb, they do matter. nuts are one of those things that almost always need to be more of an occassional treat than a daily part of your menu, if you want to continue to lose weight. at least, that's what i've seen thusfar. i don't know. i always advise people to ditch induction after two weeks even though the books says you _can_ stay on it longer. people get caught up counting the minutes until they lose their weight and forget that it actually NEEDS to be gradual, anyway. you are learning eating habits that will carry you through for your whole life, not just until you lose X number of pounds. everybody's guilty of counting the minutes, including me! but getting to that point where it's just how you eat, and not how many days until you lose the next pound, is really what gets you there. if you do choose to extend your induction, do be ready to add some carbs in when you stop losing, because that seems to be what happens after a while: upping the carbs will beat stalls sometimes. yes, i know that seems confusing, but it really does happen that way very often. good luck! |
