| I am a little bit confused as to what heavy cream is, I live in the UK and am I right to assume it is double/whipping cream maybe? |

| Almene, Heavy cream is also called whipping cream. It usually has about 1 carb(0.8gm carb to be exact) per ounce, or 2 tablespoons. Welcome to LCE, by the way! ![]() HTH Shelley

| Thanks Shelley. I don't know where I would be if I hadn't found these forums, I have so many questions! In the book it states I can have 2-3 tablespoons a day of cream (as long as I am within my carb limit), however, later on it also mentions that a special food can be included and this could be three ounces (I wish it was metric) of heavy cream. Is this one and the same thing or are the three ounces separate to the 3 tablespoons? |

| I can see how that can be confusing. Since heavy cream is calorie and fat dense, I would just stick with the 2-3 Tablespoons per day rule until you are out of induction. I think what Dr Atkins is saying is that cream(heavy) serves your body as a fat, much like the olives, avocado, and sour cream he mentions in the *special category foods* paragraph in his book. Now, this is open to intreptation, as always, and some others may disagree; but that is how I would approach it. just my 2 cents Shelley

| Almene, Welcome to LCE! I believe in another post you mentioned you only have about 20 pounds to lose. You also mentioned that you know it will go slowly. For me personally (the Queen of Cream), I find that I really have to watch my cream consumption. Although it is a low carb food, it is very high in calories. And with 20 pounds or less to lose, you may find you have to watch your calories a little, too. I agree with Shelley. Just stick with the 2-3 T per day rule during induction. You may find you have to limit your cream intake during OWL, too.

| Hi BTW I tried to register as "Alcmene" but made a mistake, it's just weird to hear people address me as Almene! Yes, calories definately count. I didn't lose any weight for the first 5 days of induction but I was pushing 2000 calories. Now I am slowly shifting but I use FitDay for EVERYTHING that I consume and I limit myself to 20 carbs a day and no more then 1400 calories, it really has made a noticeable difference. |

| You may also find the cream sold as 35% cream (whipping cream) up to 50% cream (table cream)- that's how I find it here in the Great White North.

| I'm way past induction but I do still watch the cream. I have coffee almost every morning and I always use cream. Usually though, not more than a couple of ounces. I just count that as 200 cals and 2 carbs and include it in my daily total. The GOOD thing is, even if you think you used a little more than you should, it is a high percentage of fat so it's pretty filling. Those 100-200 cals should stave off hunger for a little while. On Saturdays, we get up early for the flea market and usually make a big pot of coffee to take with. I have a large "to go" or "take-away" cup with a lid and it generally takes 2 oz. of cream (that's 4 tablespoons) and I have with it 2 slices of bacon and that's breakie. 300 cals and about 3-4 carbs. That'll usually last me until we get home to make lunch but now and then I'll have a few strawberries or a small handful of nuts before lunch (if we're getting home late)

| Being a US expat in Canada I see how the differences between Imperial and Metric systems can be confusing. For those that measure in metric realize that 2 Tablespoons is 1 ounce. Or 30 ml (cc's) is also 1 ounce. The cream here is labled in percentage of milk fat also. Makes for interesting (long) shopping trips. Labels and forumulation of some foods are different in Canada than the US.
