Default quick fiber question

hey everyone!

I was wondering if anyone takes Fiber supplements. I was looking at these.

If you take those, can you subtract that fiber from total daily carb intake? If I take 16grams of fiber tablets a day, and I average 25-30 carbs a day, will my average carb intake be anywhere from 9 to 14 grams a day then? I hope you understand what I'm trying to say, it's 2:30am and i'm barely awake.

If your total carbs INCLUDES the total carbs from the fiber supps, then you can deduct the fiber from the supps. But fiber from the supps doesn't decrease other carbs you may have eaten.

Ex: Carbs from all foods 30 (say, 5 of which is fiber) + total carbs from fiber supp (10). Total carbs 40. Deduct the fiber from food (5) and the fiber from the supps (10) and you have net carbs of 25.

Alternatively, just don't count the gms of pure fiber at all. That will still give you an accurate net carb number, since if you add them in, you only have to take them out again.

Sorry It doesn't work that way. The reason you subtract fiber carbs from say blueberries is because the fiber is counted in the total carbs of the blueberries so you subtract the fiber from the blueberries. Your fiber supplements are all fiber. If you tak 16 grams of fiber a day in the supplements and the total carbs for the supplement is 16 grams then you do not ADD any carbs to your total carbs for the day.

Achilles, I don't think it works that way! Wish that it could!

You do subtract fiber from the carb count of the individual foods you eat. Those are carbs your body will use. But when you ingest just fiber, there are no additional carbs to subtract that from . . . you are just eating more fiber! Those carbs you ate, minus the fiber for those particular foods, are still there being used by your body.

Of the ingredients in these tablets:

Fructan (a natural vegetable fiber), Sorbitol, Corn Starch, Cellulose, Dextrose (adds a trivial amount of sugar), Citric Acid, Magnesium Stearate, Natural Flavors & Colors

I would be suspicious of them. You could try it and see how your body reacts.

If you need extra fiber for regularity purposes, why don't you try Flax Seeds (seeds or meal). At least that's a natural product.

Hi Ach,

I was taking fiber supplements until I discovered Maggie's cereal. They're no longer necessary. I don't think I counted it that way, though, but I like your way better

Ground flaxseed plus wheat bran makes a fiber-dense, low calorie cereal. Add protein powder (whey or soy) and you have a filling, nutritious meal that's low in calories and fat, and very good for the digestion.

See Maggie's recipe, and countless variations.

In addition to Maggie's cereal, if you switch out your regular salad greens for baby spinach leaves instead, you'll get alot of fiber and won't need supps.
