Thumbs up Very successful on Atkins, now hv thyroid meds involved...

Hi All

I'm brand new to this site and was really thrilled to see people talking about Atkins and thyroid meds. I'll try and keep my story brief but lots of history. I'm 41 and 344 lbs. I first lost over 100 lbs on Atkins when I was 24, got down to my goal 137 lbs (for 6 months), have been up and down since. Again 8 yrs ago lost almost all my excess weight w/Atkins (even met the man). Last Jan 2004 I was 100 lbs lighter than I am now because I was doing Atkins again (I mean the diet and at that time was told I had thyroid cancer. Long story short, got the thyroid removed (hopefully all cancer gone) but had difficulty going into ketosis. Read a bit and discovered that there may be problems w/Atkins diet and Synthroid. Ever since gained to where I am today and even considered gastro bypass... now I read your forum on Atkins and Meds and feel there is still the possibility that I could once again lose on the only diet that I feel I can do. So thanks for posting this info. I plan on starting again real soon. I know I can stick to Atkins. Deb

Hang in there, Deb.

I'm sure that working closely with your dr you can do this!

We'll be here to help along the way.

Default Welcome, Deb

You sound motivated and educated. Hope things will go well for you this time around. You've come to a fine forum for support and information.

I've been taking Levoxyl for many years, but I've been investigating some alternative forms of thyroid therapy, and plan to have a discussion with my doctor next time we get together.

Welcome aboard, Deb! We're here for support and encouragement.

Be sure to be in contact with your doctor, and hang in there. You're body has been through a lot - but by concentrating on making small changes and good choices every day, you can almost certainly achieve better health by controlling carbs and appetite. Getting control of eating is one of the top benefits I have found through this WOE, because once you do that, your self-confidence rises, and you tend to make better choices in other areas of your life. So it is a "domino" effect.

Anyway, while we really can't answer your concerns about synthroid and Atkins, we'll do our best to "leave the light on for you."

You might try the Atkins site (http://www.atkins.com) to see if they have anything, or even call their 800 number on the "contact us" page.

Best of luck!
Andrea

for what it's worth: i do take synthroid, and have not had any atkins issues. i only have a hypoactive thryroid though, and agree with others that working with yoru doctor is the route to go.
