Default New Newbie Supplement Question

Hi there! I've been lurking the forums since Monday, and now have a question. To preface: I've been doing Induction since Monday, have been in ketosis for 24 hours, have almost zero fatigue (which is awesome, since I walk dogs all day for a living!), and overall (minus a huge case of heartburn from delicious pepperoni last night) feel really good.

Do I really *need* to be taking supplements? Will a multi-vitamin do? And what are my non-psyllium husk laxative alternatives?

Thanks so much for your help!

Welcome Erin! Supplements are a personal preference issue. Most people do fine with just a multi-vitamin.

Fiber options include adding flax meal or ground flax seed to your meals, many veggies are high in fiber, like spinach. I am sure there are others and someone here will chime in with additions to the list.

hello erin. as libby said, supplement preferences vary.

regardless, i would reccomend at least a mutlivitamin. i like the ones targeted at low-carb diets, but that's not necessarily required. i've found since i started taking vitiamins, i just don't get sick the same way i used to and i feel better. it also helps to shut up my mom when she complains i've lost too much weight to be eating "healthy."

Me too, Kim. Love the flaxseed. I add the ground stuff to EVERYTHING!

As for supplements, do a search on this site: Supplements. There are several old threads about what everyone takes and why. I'm just too lazy to list all mine again. LOL!

BTW, welcome to LCE!

Ive been on this low carb craze for almost 2 years now. There are times where your not getting all you need. A daily supplement wont hurt. Routine is always good and there is something to be said about knowing your treating yourself well. Why not take a supplement?

Hi
I am in induction, first 2 weeks.
Can I take this flax seed ?

GNC Natural Brand Cold-Milled Flax Seeds, Certified Organic 15 oz (425 g)
Total Carb = 5 g
Dietary fiber = 3 g
Sugars = 1 g
The serving size = 1 TBS (15 g)

Or maybe I should look for a No sugar no carb brand if available?

Thanks

Generally, flaxseed meal is okay for induction.

What do the package ingredients list for the GNC milled flaxseeds? Any sugar or -lose type ingredients? (example, sucralose).

I ask because 1 g. sugar per 1 TBS seems kind of high compared to the nutrition data I have for straight flaxseed. So, possibly that product has some sugar or other filler that makes it a little more carby than normal. Here's what's shown for 1 TBS of flax seeds:

59 calories
4.1 g fat
2.3 g protein
4.1 g carbohydrate
3.4 g fiber
0.1 g sugar

So, net carbs are 0.7 g per TBS (4.1 g carb minus 3.4 g fiber )
