| Well, I am new. Starting Monday (I want to read about Atkin's over the weekend.) I was wondering if you had any tips. The hardest thing I can think of is that we are in the South. I want food normal people eat and not crepes and fritattas. What are some of your faves? I also wanted to know about cheese in induction...can I have it? Any kind? Thanks! Missi |

| Welcome, Missi. Most cheese is an acceptable food on induction. I'm sorry, but I guess I'm not a normal person, since I love a good frittata, but then again I was raised Italian. You'll find that we have members in all parts of the country who are doing well with this way of eating. As for tips, first one is to read the whole book first. That will answer many of your questions and also give you a good understanding of how this nutritional approach works. You'll still have plenty of questions, but they'll be more targeted, so to speak. Next, browse around this site. Click on the "beginners" link at the top of this page for lots of good information. Please make yourself at home.

| Hi Missi and welcome. Atkins says you can have up to 4 oz of cheese on induction, but do be sure and read the book. I think I understand what you mean about "normal people food" although I do love a good frittata also! How does this sound for some options? Bacon and eggs, cheeseburgers (no buns), omletttes, grilled chicken, pork skins, chef salad, scambled eggs, deviled eggs, jello (sugar free of course), meatloaf, pork chops, steak, shrimp, fish, LC cheesecake, fresh veggies, strawberries...I could go on, but how does that sound for some "normal" type food? The important thing to remember is that a lot of "normal" food, prepared in "normal" ways to which we are accustomed, made a lot of us FAT. The LC lifestyle is about learning to live and eat a new way. It is easy to do no matter where you live--you just have to be open minded and willing to learn a different way to do things. But in now way do you need to feel deprived, because this way of eating is full of delicious options. You will find lots of good support and experience here, so post often and let us know how you're doing. In fact, if there is a southern specialty which you ove but think you can't have any more, I'll bet soemone here has developed a LC version of it, just ask. Good luck, and welcome!

| Thanks, guys. (I'm sorry about the fritatta crack, I've never heard of them before, honest.) I guess buscuits and gravy are out, but all the other stuff sounded great. As far as portions, I should just eat until I am comfortably full and not until I am complete gorged, huh? I will read the book. I promise. (I am a WW drop-out, but I am really looking to this to work!) Melissa |

| while i agree with most of the options presented by other members, plase note that atkins does not equal binge on meat. calories in vs calories out will still play a role. go for leaner options like seafood and poultry. personally i like the indivudually wrapped mozarella cheese stix as a snack. |

| Welcome, Missi! I'll ditto what everyone above said, especially Shimmer's advice about water. At first you may think you will float away! But water really is a crucial part of your new way of eating. Most people here have found that drinking one half their current weight in ounces (140 pounds = 70 ounces water) helps tremendously. It will also help to keep to all natural foods during induction. No LC processed foods like bars and shakes (although some people do not have issues with the shakes). A lot of people are also sensitive to aspartame. Stick to splenda. There is a recipe on this site for a splenda-sweetened jello which is very good. Jello with a little whipped cream will go a long way towards curbing the sweet demon. And I think calories really depend on how much weight you need to lose. In the beginning, calories are not such a big issue while ridding your body of all the "bad" stuff. But as you lose, you may find that calories do play a role in your weight loss success. That's why you will see lots of references to FitDay and Diet Power . . . software that keeps track of the calories/carbs you eat. And caffeine. That's another "your mileage may vary" thing. Some people are very senstive to caffeine, while others are not. I do half regular and half caffeine for my morning coffee (3 cups!) You will have many questions . . . we all did! Ask away and good luck!

| Welcome Missi! You've had good advice from members so I won;t add to it. I'm also living in the south and there is almost nothing I can't get here that I couldn't get when I was living in NYC. I'm sure you'll have no trouble following Atkins since it's mostly meat and good healthy vegetables (lots of thoseafter induction and even fruit!). |

| Welcome, Melissa! One good thing is that after a time of staying on plan your appetite will decrease and so the amount you need to be comfortably full will decrease. That's why during induction I wouldn't worry too much about calorie counts if you follow the plan with the two cups salad veggies and one cup other veggies. Soon enough you won't want so much. Also when you up your veggies and add some fruits in time it brings those counts down as well. Hope you enjoyed reading the book and good luck with your induction.
