Question water

Hi, It's me again Olivia, I drink at least 10 glasses of
water a day. Eight ounces. I heard that if you drink
your body weight in ounces of water you can clog
your kidneys and cause irreversible damage. Is this
a scare tactic,if so why? Thanks Olivia.

Sounds like mis-information. About half your lbs of body weight in ounces (in other words for a person who weighs 250 lbs. that would be 125 oz) seems to work well as long as you're taking it in over the course of the day and not alll at once.

I heard you should not "force" yourself to drink water and that you can drink too much. I think a reasonable amount (1/2 of your body weight in ounces) throughout the day is plenty! Too much of anything isn't a good thing (they say!)

There have been newspaper reports recently about excessive water consumption by athletes engaged in heavy activity. If you're sweating a huge amount, and consuming a huge amount of plain water, apparently you can upset the electrolyte balance, which is maintained by minerals in the blood stream. This can have an adverse effect on your system.

Please note: heavy athletic activity and heavy sweating is involved. Not your everyday situation for most of us.

Ten 8-oz glasses a day is nowhere near excessive, and probably good for most people's kidneys (not to mention the skin, the blood circulation, and other things that benefit from good hydration).

There was a girl here is Colorado that died from excessive water intake but she was on ECSTASY! So I'm sure that story has gotten around to forget that she was consuming a fair amount of illegal drugs and drank an EXTREME amount of water in a very short time.

I try and drink ten 16 ounce glasses a day but usually get in only 8. But I obviously have a higher weight. I have not had trouble and find that with this amount I have not had any trouble with minor bladder infections (which I use to get occassionally) which is a great incentive for me.

i just listen to my body, when i'm thirsty i drink water. no time for cokes, tea, or crystal lite anymore. my goal is to drink 130oz a day, but so far i am only up 80-90 oz. i am noticing that i am thirsting for water more often now. i agree with everyone else... the cases of death from drinking too much water are extreme cases with other circumstances.

The "experts have set minimum limits but no upper limits for water...I would say as long as it is drank over a period of time and given time to flush out...without any other extreme "things" happening like sweating excessively or drugs or whatever...that drinking water is safe...and the experts are pointing to that too...they are recommending 3.7 liters a day...which for those of us doing gallonse and ounces that is a gallon.
