Welcome, joker.

I would suggest you might want to start with Atkins Diabetes Revolution which gives you a good understanding of the interplay of carbs/blood glucose/insulin. You might follow that with Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution which is a better guide to the eating program itself. We also have a diabetic forum here at LCE.

Joker, all I can tell you is that my husband is diabetic, controlled with pills and exercise. He has been able to cut his medications in half by following a modified low carb plan. He was "forced" to do this when I started Atkins, and was amazed at how much better he was able to control his glucose levels. (He did not need to lose weight.)

Maggie's advice is right on! Get those two books and I think the light bulb in your head will click on on you will be able to lose weight safely while learning good eating habits for life -- which will help you control your diabetes.

Welcome, jokerfriendly. Ditto on the suggestions to get the books. You may also want to try your local library (if you've got a good one) and read up on some different low carb programs for diabetics. I love Atkins and would recommend it but I know there are some other good prgrams out there as well.

You've come to a great site. Good luck in your journey.

Welcome Joker!

Another "former diabetic" here!
I *reversed* my type II diabetes by eating low-carb (Atkins) and I have to agree with you... the standard, recommended "diabetic diet" DOES cause weight gain! Not to mention, it made my blood sugar go UP not down. :(

Another book to consider: The Schwarzbein Principle, by Diana Schwarzbein, MD. This book is a real eye-opener and is the reason why I will continue to eat LC for LIFE! She is an endocrinologist in California who primarily treats type II diabetics & you will definitely sympathize with the stories in her book.

Whatever you decide to do, education is key. Read, read, read everything you can about your condition and about this woe (way of eating). And discuss it with your doctor. My endo was not "pro-lowcarb" when I first told him I was going to try eating this way, but he said he'd keep an open mind and gave me 6 months to get my fasting glucose & insulin levels under control... now, he is encouraging me to stay on low-carb!
Good luck,

welcome joker. i started low-carbing 'cause my doc told me in was in the fast lane for diabetes myself. not an issue anymore! in addition to the other fine advice you've gotten, please do be sure to discuss your plans with your doc to make sure you've got an ok and are making choices that work with your personal medical condition. good luck!

I am going to get the Atkins book and start on it asap! my dr. is 100% behind me and thinks that a low carb plan is key - he has great hopes for me and knows I can do it. I know I can do it!! At least I have great support at home too - my husband is behind me too - which means alot and now with this site - I have support with all of you.

Again thank you with the words and advice and believe me - Im not going to be a diabetic and I WILL lose this weight!! here we go!!

I started for my health and that of my family..I continued because of the weight loss and the health benefits...getting hubby and daughter eating like I do took a while but I managed and now we all eat much healthier and have stayed much healthier...all total last year we only missed one day of school due to sickness...I attribute the difference to LCing...nothing more...having hubby in with you is a great advantage...he will benefit too, even if he has no weight to lose...it is a very healthy approach to living!
