Exclamation Carb Confusion

Ok I have some confusion about carbs, do you count total carbs or net carbs. I had one of those Atkins carb bars and it says it has 22g of total carbs but 3g of net carbs....ok i saw another breakfast bar that has 23g of carbs but it stated that it only has 2g net carbs. I am on day 13 of my induction period, I must say I have lost 6 pounds, don't know how many inches, I was a bad girl and didn't measure myself:( , but i expected to lose more weight and I am working out 5 days a week for at least an hour to an hour and a half. But for the most part I don't crave sugar or carbs, but i don't want to eat at all, and that bothers me, that's why I eat the bars becasue I have to have something.

Number one, you shouldn't be eating any low-carb bars, shakes, candies, et cetera during Induction.

Number two, it's a YMMV (your mileage may vary) thing about net carbs where low carb products are concerned. I have to count the entire carbs when consuming those products, and not just net carbs, else I'll gain weight. However, I do count just the net carbs with real foods, such as green beans and nuts.

Number three, if all you're eating are low carb bars, that's not healthy, now is it? The entire low carb approach to eating advocates healthy eating. If all you're eating are low carb products, then you'll never make a lifetime change in eating habits, and you'll never maintain your weight loss.

I suggest getting the book out and re-reading all about Induction and following it to the letter.

My two cents.........my opinions are not a reflection of these boards. I'm just speaking from 7 years experience of low carbing.

Listen to April. She knows whereof she speaks.

I think, from reading your posts, that you are trying to do LC without really knowing everything you should about it. You need to read the book for your plan, and, indeed, read everything you can find about low carb in general. I highly recommend a book by Jonny Bowden, "Living the Low Carb Life". He not only gives great basic advice, but compares the major LC plans, and explains which one is best for each individual.

Listen to April. The Low-carb lifestyle is about relearning eating habits that will last a lifetime--not a temporary "diet." Hungry or not, you must follow an eating routine that provides appropriate nutrients throughout the day, along with plenty of water.

As for the "net carb" thing. Nobody ever really decided what this phrase is supposed to mean.

Manufacturers of low-carb junk food (which IMHO includes the Atkins bars) subtract the "non sugar" sweeteners (like maltitol) from the total carbohydrates in the ingredient list, and call the result "net carbs." Sugar alcohols affect people differently, and for some people will halt weight loss.

Using another definition, the revised Atkins guidelines allow you to subtract the grams of FIBER from fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, and other foods to come up with what they call "net carbs." Since fiber is indigestible (although it is a carbohydrate, chemically speaking) it really doesn't count in the total carbs available to your body for nutrition purposes. So--it IS appropriate to deduct FIBER grams from your total carbohydrate count. This allows you to eat more good foods, like veggies, to accumulate the appropriate number of carbs in your daily total.

Wink Re: Carb Confusion

ok, I had the carb bars for one day I think, I didn't have an appetite at all and I knew I had to have something so I had an Atkins Carb Bar, I have the newest Atkins New Diet Revolution Book and I read that it's ok to eat the bars....I am eating what I am supposed to on my induction, I am on day 14, I have lost 7 lbs and lots of inches, that one day I just fell off the wagon. I have read the book up until the chapter about Induction, i haven't gone any further because I am still on induction, now tomorrow I will continue to phase two. Thank you ladies for all your input...but just to let you know, I have been following the induction menu.....WOW, ya'll are on it

Glad to hear you're reading the book! Really, though, read it cover to cover, and do read other books, like Jonny Bowden's or "The Schwarzbein Principle". Good, solid impartial information, along with your own discoveries of how your body works, are your best sources.
Unfortunately, the Atkins people are trying to sell you not just books, but bars, shakes, candy, etc. There is a general opinion among veteran LC'ers that the ingredients in these products will cause many to stop losing. I consider them emergency food only!
BTW, welcome to LCE!!

I ca'nt eat the bars at tall...lest I have less than fun gastrointestinal problems...shall we call them...but hungry or not I try to have a fruit or vegetable snack no less than every 4 hours...I avoid processed "junk foods" almost entirely and I agree that you have to eat something...my advice is to grap some vegetables and a bit of dip or a meat and cheese rollup instead.

I am glad you are following the meal plan and enjoying the benefits of the diet plan--less hunger, lower numbers on the scale and smaller pants sizes!
