Hi dandaman,
Welcome to LCE.

According to Dr Atkins, excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar.

It is also a stimulant, and some feel it *stimulates* the appetite as well.

Dandaman,

Shelley is absolutely right, however, I should point out that many people here refused to give up their 1-2 cups per day and still managed to lose weight successfully with this woe (way of eating). There are arguments on both sides of the issue...

On the one hand are the arguments which Shelley has mentioned above and they are backed by some pretty sound studies, but on the other hand, other studies have shown caffeine's thermogenic properties to raise metabolism thereby offsetting the possible negative effects. Also, some research out of Switzerland (I think?) indicated that moderate intake of caffeinated coffee (1-3 cups per day) could significantly reduce one's risk of Alzheimer Disease.

What did I do?
I drank 2 cups a day until I stalled out completely and then I went off the coffee. By that point, it didn't seem like such a deprivation & I was highly motivated to do so.
You'll just have to see how it affects you. It's very much a YMMV (your mileage may vary) sort of thing...
HTH,

I have been drinking diet mountain dew for years, along with my 2-3 cups of coffee each day until about 3 weeks ago and I went off the pop just to see if there was a change and last night had just one 12 oz can of diet dew (I usually drink 24oz bottles) and I was so buzzed from the one can I could barely throw darts (one time I missed the board al 3 times and I never miss) so I was shocked that there was that much caffeine in the pop I drank like crazy. I lose very slowly, maybe a lb a month so when I am weighed at Curves the 29th I will see if it helped me in that dept. I don't plan to ever drink it again, felt too much like the speed I used to take years ago!!

Mountain Dew has more caffeine than even coke and Pepsi I believe. It is the one soft drink I have never allowed my kids to have. (They bounce off the walls enough now as it is! LOL)
