Unhappy Help! Ketosis Breath!!!

Hello All,

My DH informed me yesterday that my breath has "that smell" again like it did when I have low-carb dieting in the past. He said he had noticed it the last few days. I'm now paranoid that I'm "offending" co-workers and others with my Ketone Breath! Any advice on which breath mints or gum to use or any home remedies to help with this side effect?

I'm happy that I'm in ketosis, but I don't want to have stinky breath either. I just wondered if anyone had any good mints or gum choices that are low-carb before I go to the store and have to look at the ingredients on each package.

Thanks so much!

One of our members found that putting a drop or two of mint extract in her water bottle helped a lot!

You could try rinsing your mouth with a solution of baking soda and water. I use it right before I brush and then if I need to in between.

I also add 2- 4 drops of pepermint extract to my bottled water. So far, I've no complaints from family.

Thanks for the tips! Does the mint extract make the water taste "minty"?

Yes, but only faintly ... depending, of course, on how much extract you put in.

Reviving this thread as my wife has informed that my breath is starting to go that way. Of course, it could just be 6 consecutive nights of Mexican food.

LOL Sven, I'm sure the Mexican food might have something to do with it too!!! I used to do the mint drops in my water bottle. I also found Eclipse MINTS are sweetened with splenda as are those IceBreakers mints that are in the little tiny gel balls. both their gums are sweetened with aspertame, grrrrr.

I was reading an article in a magazine recently that addressed this....but now I don't remember which magazine!

I do remember some of the tips:
Brush your tongue.....this does more for your breath than brushing your teeth.

They also gave the tip about the parsley.

Crest Pro Care mouth wash is made with different ingredients than regular mouthwash, no alcohol, but something that makes it more effective with longer-lasting results.

Avoid garlic, onions, etc.

Floss

Brush your tongue and teeth frequently and/or use those finger brush things.

If I think of any more or find the magazine, I'll let you know.

I have a toothbrush (a Reach I think) that the backside is covered with soft ridges to brush your tongue with. I really like it!!

Thank you PQ. I'm not where I want to be, but I am very happy that I've lost more than 50 pounds of "water weight" this year.

This site has been incredibly helpful. I honestly believe that the key to the weightloss has been "If your waterglass is empty, fill it up. If it's full, drink some." I tend not to cheat, but that doesn't mean I don't eat well. (Don't flagellate yourself if you do "cheat,") This weekend, I had Thaifood for lunch with a friend. I'm sure there was sugar in the peanut sauce and the soup probably had some starch, but it was still relatively low carb (stayed away from the noodles).

I guess the key is to adapt your lifestyle to low-carb rather than thinking of it as a diet where you cheat. I mean, how much of a diet can it be when you can have:

Scallops wrapped in Bacon
Spinach Salad
Grilled T-Bone
Sauteed Mushrooms/Onions
Steamed Asparagus w/Hollaindaise
Mashed Cauliflower (w/Butter& Sour Cream and Chives Cream Cheese)
Sliced Blueberries&Strawberries w/fresh whipped cream.

This isn't necessarily a special treat dinner, but a regular part of the low-carb way of eating.

Welcome to Low-Carb,

The food's not bad here.
