    Unhappy Feelin Grumpy

Ok guys, did anyone else feel totally grumpy when they first started induction around the 3rd day? I'm feeling it and also extremely tired, this seems to be that hardest part of it all!!! I read that this stage is terrible for your health because you are depriving your body of needed nutrients and the reason you are grumpy is because your brain needs carbs to function properly, but I read it in the ZOne book sooooo....... that might be controversial..... It's the point where I just don't want to take it... Any advice or experience to share? I think my head weighs 50 lbs

I could quite cheerfully have throttled myself and everyone around me for about 2 weeks msmrnd2 - but it went after that - and from then on I was flyin' and still am! (2 years later!)

Ditto what beachfox wrote. Trust me it will get better. your body has all sorts of mechanisms designed to make sure your brain gets fuel to run on. You'll often hear that anti-lowcarb mantra about your brain starving for carbs. But your brain will run on ketones as efficiently or more efficiently as glucose from carbs. It can also run on alcohol but that's not relative to this WOE (or shouldn't be). In addition your liver is quite adept at converting protein to glucose in a process known as gluconeogenesis. Fat in a limited fashion is also able to be turned into glucose by the liver. But it's the switching over process that wreaks havoc with our bodies for a few days or even longer. (Ymmv). I spent about 3 or 4 days with a 50 pound head. To be accurate i spent about a day with a 50 pound head and the next day a 40 pound head... well you get the picture.

Yep!! Detox is the pits, but after it's done, you will not BELIEVE how good you feel. And that good feeling sticks around, honest.
Look at it this way: if you feel it, then you really, really needed to do it. It means you're getting healthier!

Hey, I am back on atkins after falling off the wagon for some months. I am still recovering some from surgery (almost 8 wks ago) and today is day 2. Yeah, I feel like a TOTAL slug. just yuck yuck yucky. Might fall asleep at my desk in a minute! But I know from past experience that this is expected the first few days, and I am pretty sure it is intensified by the fact that my body is still healing.
I was able to get a little boost, though. I resisted my FAVORITE muffins that someone brought in to work to share! yaye!!!

    Hi, Heather. Welcome back!
Good for you for jumping back on the wagon, and for resisting those muffins. Things will get easier...I know you know this.
BTW: you live in one of my favorite cities ever; I lived there for about six years in the eighties. So beautiful!!

I actually felt really good during the first several weeks of my low carb diet switch. But, then at the time I didn't really know much about Atkins' induction yet. I was just eating low carb by eliminating starchy foods and sugar. Maybe that's why I never noticed the induction woes I've heard so much about.

I was miserable the first 5 or 6 days but after that I felt absolutely wonderful. I am in the grumpy, miserable stages again sine I am starting over basically after about 10 weeks of indescretion eating everything in sight!

Ditto, ditto, ditto...everyone seems to experience the grumps in some way. As an avid napper pre-low carb. I can say that after the first week it will get better. Well for me it did, some people might take longer. I have so much more energy that I don't even need to nap anymore on the weekends. It has also helped me not drag so much after lunch. My typical lnch before low carb had me so very sleepy that I wanted to crash by 4.
