Here in the states, manufacturer can decide what a "serving" is, so always keep this in mind. Then, if there's .5 or less carbs per "serving" they can call is zero.

For most foods that come with labels, you can count a "0" as .5 and be fine.

You'll see this phenomenon on many labels as you become a compulsive label reader.

Hi Cat,

Maggie's right, but you should also be aware that the labels ARE sometimes wrong. If a label's info doesn't look right, or it just looks too good to be true, add up the numbers for yourself: count the fat grams as 9 calories each, protein and carb grams as 4 calories each. If the numbers don't add up, and I've seen it often enough, you have to guess from the ingredients where the missing calories are coming from.

I was thinking something was wrong.... Now I'm even more confused.

Take my green beans (frozen) forexample. the Nutrition Facts say for 1 cup there are 0 Fat, 4 carbs, (2 fiber), and 1 for protein. So Staci, if I understand you correctly, I add 16 for carbs and 4 for protein I get 20 calories, which is 5 less than the package. What else could there possibly be in green beans?!? So to stress myself out even more, I compare the package to my Atkins Carb Counter and it says to count green beans at 2.4 carbs per .5 cup. Does .5 mean 1/5 of a cup? That's what...two friggin beans?!?

My head hurts!

I've got a handy dandy "Hidden Carb Calculator" which opens with Excel. All you do is okug in 4 numbers from any nutritional label, and it will tell you the proper carb count of the food stuff.

If you want a copy, e-mail me at aprilreinhardt2@yahoo.com and I'll send it to you.

.5 cup would be 1/2 cup.

As you've found out it's not just the carbs, it's also the ingredients. I'm not sure if there's any other seasoning salts that don't have sugar, but if you want we could probably come up with some ideas for making your own.

Oooh, Gotcha. then .05 would be a 5th?

On the Seasoning salt... I just ditched the Johnny's and am going back to good ole Lawrys, which by the way I have individual spices for. Much easier to grab one humongoid shaker than search for four or five....What...me lazy?!?!

.05 would be either 5%, or 5/100, or a 20th, your choice, depending on the context in which it is used.

1/5 cup is actually .2...darn fractions.

I just bought some New Orleans seasoning and didn't look at the label. Now I wonder! I never thought about the seasonings having sugar.

OKay..different question.. I have been usingthe cool Hidden Carb Calculator that April emailed me. I am sometimes coming up not with hidden carbs, but with an overage on the calories...What's up with that?!?

Oh, and I didn't mean to say there was something wrong with the calculator...I get the same results when I do it in my head!
