Default Peanut Butter

I'm out of induction; trying desperately to consume 25 grams of carbs. (in the right order as well) and today I just cannot handle any more salad or vegetables. I don't have any nuts handy, but I do have peanut butter! But I have read that peanut butter may not be a god thing....

So I check the label, and it doesn't seem that bad; 5g carbs minus 2g fiber equal 3 net carbs in 2 Tbsp. I even put it through the hidden cab test, and it actually came up with LESS carbs than the label.

So what am I missing? Why does Peanut Butter have such a bad rap?

A lot of commercial peanut butters have unhealthy ingredients like partially hydrogenated oils, sugars, etc. The best choice is all natural nut butters that you can buy in jars (or little plastic tubs if you have a store that does fresh nut butters), or that you make yourself. I just grind nuts in my food processor with a drizzle of a neutral-flavored oil until it's the texture I want. When I buy nut butter in jars, I buy Smuckers All Natural peanut butter in the grocery, or Arrowhead Mills almond butter in my health food store.
Can I ask, where did you read that peanut butter is bad? Nut butters, and nuts, too, are calorie dense and should be eaten sparingly, but they are a healthy snack. It's the bad junk they add that isn't good for you.

I'm not sure it was any specific place that I got that impression. I read a lot. So much so that I have a hard time remembering the details of every tidbit I come across. So, to answer your question, the "bad" that I remember could very well have been what you just referred to in the partially hydrogenated oils and sugar.

The Peanut butter I have on hand it Walmart brand. So...it's probably bad because of the partially hydrogenated oil and sugar (albeit low). Thanks for the clarification, Trina. I will look for the Smuckers. I have also used the Maranatha brand for Tahini. I will check out their peanut butter as well, and use sparingly.

Yep, I've gotten the Maranatha brand nut butters, too (I love tahini, BTW).
One of my favorite ways to eat peanut and almond butter is stuffed in celery. Tasty, neat, and you get a little extra portion of veggies!
Another favorite of mine is macadamia butter; I make it myself with a little mac oil, and save it for a treat 'cause macs are so expensive (but sooo good!).

For some people, eating peanut butter is just a craving starter.... I know it is for me.... I usually have to keep peanut butter out of the house unless I am getting ready to make my peanut butter cookies that I can eat....
I have a hard time just measuring out 2 tbs of peanut butter.... be careful....
just one of those YMMV foods....

I had a peanut butter ban going because I started eating too much but now I allow it. I take my 1/8 c measuring cup and fill it and eat it with celery. MMM. That way I know I'm only getting one serving. Before when I banned it I was just eating it willy nilly without measuring.

I hear you guys...I can take a spoon and a jar of peanut butter and be a lost soul. I have to portion it out, like Noel, or I can have a problem. I like to make up pb-stuffed celery and take it to work, or put two tablespoons in a little ramekin and put the jar away.

i think it's the craving factor for a lot of folks. the sweetness can get you going. or at least it can me. i am very cautious with it.

CushieButterfield:
One day I will be that strong. The jar of PB in one hand and a spoon in the other (oh heck, I've used forks too ahahahhahahahaha) is a recipe for a disaster.

And then, I start eating everything else....

I will try that pb and celery snack--as soon as I have the strength to resist. I'm getting better, I fought some cookies to the death yesterday...

I love Peanut Butter on my Pancakes. And it's no where near a couple of tablespoons. When I do that, I pretty much have my meal for the day. I try to limit that to once a month.

As far as carbs are concerned, I've been able to switch over to Low Carb SoyNut Butter. It weighs in at 6g total Carbs with 5g Fiber. That puts it at 1Net Carb. With 10g of Protein. Those are great numbers. It does take some getting used to. It is not as sweet nor smooth as peanut butter. I get it at our local heath food stores.
Here's their website off the label www.soynutbutter.com
