There was recently a case in UK of one of the film people being hospitalised because of too much water and I think there is a post somewhere from BBJ1 with a comment from her dietitian about too much water leaching nutrients from the body.

Hi Ivana,
As a general rule, 2-3 liters a day are safe. Some folks follow the *half your body weight in ounces* rule; you know, if you weigh 150 lbs, drink 75 oz of water. Some folks, just aim for 8, 8oz glasses(2L) or 10, 8oz glasses, etc. The important thing is to spread your water intake out over the whole day.
Electrolyes can be *washed* from the body if you drink large amounts of water in a single setting. It is a term called water intoxication; folks lose large amounts of sodium that effects brain function, as if drunk, therefore the term intoxication. I saw this many times during my rotation on the psych unit when I was in nursing school.
Long story short...keep track of how much you drink, and spread it out over 10-12 hours.
HTH

There was a Washington DC police officer who died because he drank something like 3 gallons of water yesterday. The article in the post contains some really useful specifics about it, but cautions you not to over react and not drink enough water. They also listed a few other people who died during marathons because of it.

I believe you'll need to sign up with the post to be able to see the article, but it's free to sign up.

Here's an article from the mayo clinic that more directly answers your question (or rather helps you answer for yourself) how much water you should be drinking.

Happy reading

This is interesting to hear about. I have a rough enough time drinking the amount I'm supposed to. I can't fathom drinking the amount of water it would take to die.

This may answer your question about water intoxication....... it can be very dangerous. Shelley gave excellent advice..... space your water consumption out during the day and you should be fine. http://chemistry.about.com/cs/5/f/blwaterintox.htm

I love, love, love, love a nice glass of water. I got through at least 5 litres a day. My body craves it. There's times when I wake up in the middle of the night because I'm thirsty and want water. I've mentioned it to my doctor and she's never been alarmed by this.

I think it was here (Dallas area)....a kid died at a frat party when the other guys funneled like 5 gallons of water down him. The human body is composed of ALOT of water, but like everything else, we need to balance out the consumption of it. Shelley's advice makes alot of sense. I "perspire" alot during the workday and have to drink alot of water to keep up with the loss. I also take my supplements and try to eat right. Balance is the key!

Well.... not it's no so silly, really. There was a frat hazing death this spring at Chico (Calif. State University). A plege was forced to drink gallons of water in less that 2 hours. Several of the frat members have been charged with murder, I think.

Crap! I feel bad about that post. I was thinking of the old frat parties with booze using the funnels and stuff.
I really didn't think they were that out there to have actually done it with water.
People can get pretty sick these days.
Sometimes I wonder why these kids were sent to college. Maybe just to get them out of the house.

Nice Icon D2B -- Water consumption is something I seriously struggle with - I'll have coffee 2 or 3 times a day - and that's it for my TOTAL liquid intake. Not exactly a helathy way to get all your healthy water in is it? I'll do good for a few days - then crash and burn by simply forgetting to drink it. You'd think a person wouldn't 'forget' to drink water - but trust me, it definitely happens. I'm living proof! ;-)

My goal is to drink at least 100 ounces of water throughout the day - nice goal =- but actually doing it is something else!

Talk to you later!
