By GI diet are you referring to the one eating hot dogs and green beens. Recruiters use it to get new recruits down to sign-up weight quickly. I've done that one as well. It is a very calorie restrictive diet. Seems that it works towards shrinking your stomach and controlling your food intake. The thing about it is your only supposed to stay on it for 1 week, if I recall. The 1st week of any diet will show great results due to the immediate water loss. Even Atkins shows a considerable weight drop in the initial week due to water loss. It is after induction (1st 2 weeks) that real fat loss is occurring. All "diets" when you go off of them and return to your old eating habits will have you gain your weight back. That is why Low-Carb is referred to as a Way-of-Eating or Way-of-Life.

I think the GI diet refers to 'glycemic index', food choices determined by impact on blood sugar levels. High carb foods cause blood sugar 'spikes,' in turn, leading to the release of insulin. Insulin is the primary hormone responsible for fat storage. It seems to me that the GI diet focuses on eating foods that have a lower impact on blood sugar...proteins, complex carbohydrates, and fats.

I am talking about the glycemic index one. I just wondered about the diff between that and Atkins.

Dee...not sure of all the details on the GI diet. Suspect that, in the end, it is somewhat of a low-carb plan but allows lots more carbs than Atkins.

This might be a little big, but here is the GI diet I was thinking of:
Diet: Chemical & Enzyme Balanced, Lose 10 Lbs in 3 Days!!

Day 1, Tuesday
Breakfast: 1/2 Grapefruit, 1 slice Toast, 2 Tablespoons Peanut Butter,
Black coffee or Tea

Lunch: 1/2 cup Tuna, 1 slice Toast, Black coffee or Tea

Dinner: 2 slices any meat (about 3oz.), 1 cup String Beans, 1 cup Beets, 1
small Apple, 1 cup Vanilla Ice Cream, Black coffee or Tea

Day 2, Wednesday
Breakfast: 1 Egg, 1 slice Toast, 1/2 Banana, Black coffee or Tea

Lunch: 1 cup Cottage Cheese, 5 Saltine Crackers, Black coffee or Tea

Dinner: 2 Hot Dogs (no buns), 1 cup Broccoli, 1/2 cup Carrots, 1/2 Banana,
1/2 cup Vanilla Ice Cream, Black coffee or Tea

Day 3, Thursday
Breakfast: 5 Saltine Crackers, 1 slice Cheddar Cheese (or 1oz stick), 1
Small Apple, Black coffee or Tea

Lunch: 1 Hard Boiled Egg, 1 slice Toast, Black coffee or Tea

Dinner: 1 cup Tuna, 1 cup Beets, 1 cup Cauliflower, 1/2 Banana, 1/2
Cantaloupe, 1/2 cup Vanilla Ice Cream, Black coffee or Tea

The diet works on chemical breakdown and is proven.
DO NOT VARY OR SUBSTITUTE ANY OF THE ABOVE FOODS!
Salt & Pepper may be used, but no other seasonings.
When no quantities are given, there are no restrictions other than "COMMON
SENSE."

This diet is to be used 3 days at a time ONLY.
After 3 days of dieting you can eat normal foods, but don't over do it!
DON'T PIG OUT!!!
After 4 days of normal eating start the 3-day diet (it's safe).
REMEMBER: Don't pick in between meals.
Diet on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday ONLY.
Drink lots of WATER... You can drink Diet Cola and other diet drinks.

Ingredients:
4 slices bread (for Toast)
2 Tblsp. Peanut Butter
10 Saltine Crackers
2 Eggs (at least 1 hard boiled)
1- 1oz slice Cheddar Cheese
1 cup Cottage Cheese
1 & 1/2 cup Tuna
3 oz of Meat, your choice
2 Hot dogs, beef
1 cup String Beans
2 cups Beets
1 cup Broccoli
? cup Carrots
1 cup Cauliflower
2 Bananas
? Grapefruit
? Cantaloupe
2 small Apples
2 1/2 cups Vanilla Ice Cream
Black Coffee or Tea

gracie-there isn't a magic number of carbs for one day. for most plans, you may have an initial period, like atkins induction, which has a set number of carbs-along with some very important other requirements!-and then, the next phase has a different amount of carbs, and different additional instructions.

your very best bet is to pick a plan and get the book that goes along with it! asking "how many carbs is ok?" is sort of like asking, "how much money do i need?" for what?

if you have trouble picking a plan, you might want to check out johnny bowden's book comparing all the lc plans. i've heard rave reivews on it! if you're "doing" atkins or interested, then the book you need is "dr. atkins new diet revolution." when you make some specific choices, we can help out a lot more!

I remember back in the early 70s before Atkins published his first book the Air Force diet was a big thing. Sounds a lot like what Tom describes.
