Default LC ideas please

Hi,

While I am happily following Atkins, I am trying to get my Mom onto a LC WOE and I think Atkins will be too restrictive for her.

She has followed the low fat way for many years but was most successful on WW and managed to get to goal 4 times but couldn't stick to it. She particularly loves fruit (which is why I think she won't be able to stick to Atkins) and has heaps of problems restricting portion size of nuts and cheese, has high blood pressure and high levels of bad cholesterol. I don't know a lot about the other LC plans so am seeking advice about what might be a good plan for her. PS I've given her my copy of Jonny Bowden's book about the low carb way of eating. I just hope she'll read it.

If she has Jonny Bowden's book then she will have a pretty good idea which plan suits her best. But as you suggest she may not read it. South Beach starts out pretty restrictive but as you progress you are allowed more and more choices. It is more about good carbs than low carb. There is a synopsis of the diet here

You care about your mother, and that's a good thing. You've provided her with resources, and (I'm supposing) a good example, of the low-carb way of life. Perhaps you can suggest that she talk over various nutritional approaches with her healthcare provider.

Beyond that, there's NOTHING you can do to persuade her to follow this (or any) program until she herself is ready. So please don't let this become an ongoing source of friction between you.

Best wishes!
