Default Newbie to LC--kinda sorta

I've tried Atkins about 5-6 times in as many years. I make it through the first week of Induction and then I get SO burnt out on the lack of variety of food.

This time is different for me though. I WILL make this work. I know that, for my health and for my family, I have to. I'm newly 29 years old, married with 3 children. I've battled my weight since puberty. I've done every yo yo diet in the last 19 years that I could come across. The only thing that worked, for a time, was Weight Watchers, about 16 years ago where I lost 30 lbs...from 160@age 12 to 130.

I need A LOT of support though. My hubs', love him that I do, is one of those naturally skinny people whom I detest No, seriously, he's just very active because of his job and the farm. So he's been able to maintain his weight better than I. I'd done really well up until last year when I packed on about 15 lbs in 5 months *that's another post*. Since Jan. I've tried low carb, I've tried the point system, I've tried just monitoring my caloric intake and I've packed on another 10 lbs since then.

With that in mind...I'm doing so far so good. I'm managing between 20-25 carbs *I really like veggies* and I feel pretty good. The downside....if I seen another egg I swear I'm going vomit I believe I will make it through another 2 days until I go to the grocery store, but I really need some insight for breakfast type things that do not include eggs *is that possible? *. I'm fine with bacon every day and stuff...but I do have to watch the $ as much as I can. I am a SAHM with, as I said, 3 young kids so, while we're doing pretty good, I cant spend an inordinate amount of money on food for just me. For some reason the rest of the brood believes they need to eat too *laugh*.

Hey Thath,
Welcome to the board! You'll find support, encouragement, and a kick in the pants when needed here! not really, but I have found this site to be so so helpful. For cooking suggestions, try the Low Carb cooking threads, there is one in there about eggs. Someone...ChefTrina, maybe...not sure...posted something I'm going to try with eggs and cream cheese and you fry like pancakes. Sounds good, huh?

Welcome, Thath!

This is the place for support.

I use to have a ton of variety in my meals but got a little lazy about making such elaborate dinners. I've just moved and one of my goals is to start doing that again. I bought Sharron's cookbook and it's loaded with great recipes, now I just have to make myself use it again. Maybe find a good low carb cookbook (but browse it first because one I found said it was low carb but one meal was as many carbs as I wnated in one day!)

I love eggs so I have them a lot. They are also the best source of protien fo rmy son as he does not like meat but loves his eggs and cheese as well as yogurt.

I liked the low carb dannon yogurt with some cottage cheese for breakfast sometimes. I am saying liked because like I said I got a bit lazy and am reminding myself as I type that I did use to eat other things. Or berries with cottage cheese. Do you like cottage cheese? Regular has 5 carbs in a serving. With some blueberries or raspberries it's darn good. (making a mental note to myself to get these things at the grocers)

Of course I just had a burger for berakfast the other day.

Good luck and come here often for support. I would not be 94 pounds down if it weren't for this site and the great people here.

Heather, I just left the food forum and have several new ideas for eggs!!! YAY for me

Cushie--I LOVE cottage cheese and once I'm off Induction I'll be tickled pink to add it back to my diet I do like eggs...alot. But eating them the same way every single day gets REALLY old for me. But, I believe I've found a way around that thanks to the cooking forum.

This will be an endeavor for me as I'll be cooking for myself. And, while I do monitor what my kids eat processed food wise--they need their fruits and carbs. And, as I said, my hubs is no where near being chubby *grumbles *

I really liked some advice that I saw on another site about doing it this way...make sure you eat your food before you prepare/serve the rest of the family their food. If you're full, you're less apt to want to eat what they're eating. So that's what I plan on doing on nights that I make a casserole or something, instead of a hunk of meat and some side dishes that I can pass over.

I've heard of Maggies cereal in several posts now. Where, exactly, do I find the information about Maggies cereal?

Although I can't have milk. That's a bit of a downer *laugh*

Welcome, Thath.

"Don't need no steenkin milk." Drizzle some heavy cream over it! Be aware, however, that this isn't a true induction food, since it has some grain products in it. It's wonderful for OWL and the rest of your life, however.

The recipe is here:
http://www.lowcarbeating.com/recipe_showeach.php?id=825

Hope you'll make yourself at home.

Maggie, tyvm

I can do cream I reckon--I think what I'll miss most is milk. I a nice cold glass of milk! But I'll deal with that as I go Thank you for the recipe. I'm excited to give it a go once I'm done with Induction...whenever that is

I encourage you to move past induction after the second week. By then you will have achieved ketosis and all the benefits that come with it. I say this because you are learning to eat differently. OWL is the best opportunity to pursue your education about how you react to different foods in different amounts. The education you will get will give you the tools to not just normalize your weight, but to maintain it for life.

'sides... then you get to have cereal in the morning. LOL!

LOL!!! I LOVE cereal!!! So that will be a perk.

And I probably will move past Induction after the second week. I know that weight loss can come fairly quickly during Induction, but I prefer to lose it at a slower pace because I know that is better for my body. Plus it will be better for my family. Once I'm out of Induction and open to a bit wider array of foods, after a few weeks, I'll be better able to make meals that I can eat with my family so that I continue to get the benefits of this WOL and they will too.

welcome thath. i like your listed occupation of "domestic goddess"! go figure.

i experienced a similar problem with a lack of variety when i first tried lc'ing, and ended up quitting for a while. later on, i got myself a nice cookbook for ideas. i don't even use it too much now, but when i need a fresh idea, i'll put it out. a lot of it was just avoiding those ruts we get into sometimes. even when i wasn't lc'ing, i'd get into them. it's just gradually changing your habits until it becomes natural to you.

not watching the minutes it comes off and understanding it's a process is SO important, and it always makes my heart glad when i run across somebody "getting it" right off the bat.

most of us don't cook 2 meals for us and the fam, but may make minor adjustments for the "carb eaters" at home. at first, i simply got or made the "carby" items that were the least tempting to me, and over time, my family all adjusted to my eating (and lost some weight they needed to lose, too). it works out with time. a little imagination, a little patience, and it will all become second nature. honest.

good luck to you and looking foward to getting to know you!

Oh boy am I excited. I returned a couple hours ago with my weeks supply of groceries and I discovered something...buying fresh, whole, low carb foods is really not that much more expensive than the other crap. I'm hoping I bought enough to last me the whole week *I have more leeway with fixin's for the fam.* but this will let me know for sure if I bought too much or too little.

I'm fairly lucky in the fact that my hubs is a meat and taters type of guy. The man would eat a steak, salad and baked potato *maybe* every day....unfortunately we can't quite afford that. The only real issue is the snack type foods in the house. I make a mean salsa and hubs and I have always enjoyed sitting down, watching football, with a bag of tortilla chips and my salsa. But soon, I can make my own chips from low carb tortillas. YAY...go me, go me, go me!!!
