Default Headaches/nausea...carb amounts.

First off...I have MANY questions and, while I've read several of the threads already posted, I don't have enough time to read through them all right now so if what I'm asking has already been asked/answered I apologize.

As I stated in my other thread Newbie to Low carb-Kinda,
I'm about to have day 3 of Induction under my belt. Day 1 was, to be honest, a walk in the park. No problems. Day 2 was okay. I had some nausea after breakfast but it eventually abated and I was able to eat quite a bit of meatloaf last night be just fine. Today, though, it has been a world of nothing but feeling crappy.

I woke up this morning feeling fine. It wasn't until after I had breakfast at 9:00 am, 3 eggs and approx. 5 oz of steak, that I felt like utter crud. The nausea started almost immediately. At about 11:30 I had two slices of ham and 2 oz of cheddar cheese, with a small green bell pepper and a small tomato with bleu cheese dressing to dip it in. At 2:00 I had a salmon patty with ranch dressing. At 3:30 I had 3 deviled eggs made with jalepenos and olives. By my estimation I've consumed approx. 17 net carbs today so far.

Regardless of all this...I have not been able to shake the nausea and the headaches. I'm quite irritable and feel like crap. For supper I plan on having sauerkraut and smoked sausages.

I very well could be going through carb withdrawals. I don't really know. Usually, when I've attempted LC before, and I get to feeling this bad I cave. I do NOT like feeling awful and my family doesn't appreciate my irritability *laugh*. The day is almost over--so I will be good to go to be honest.

My question--If, after the first week, I am still feeling like this should I add more carbs in the way of veggies?

One of the last times I cheated I had sucha killer headache that I would have thought it was a migraine from the detoxing my body was doing and it was the afternoon of day two. I thought I would die and almost ate something high carb to get rid of it. To be fair I didn't drink enough water that day which is why I think it was so bad.

I would add a lettuce salad into your day. I do that when on induction (and beyond of course), good way to get some veggies without a lot of carbs.

I think you will find that by week two (hopefully sooner) the yuck feelings will subside.

I agree that you'll find youself feeling better if you add more veggies - net carbs on lettuce are SO low they aren't worth counting!

It DOES pass.

BTW, just a thought - did you stop drinking coffee?? Some do when they start this WOE and THAT withdrawal is horrid. Not worth the pain imho.

More veggies, work in a little onion, the flavor and natural sugar (good carbs, don't freak) can really help you get over this rough time.

I didn't give up coffee. I'm crazy but not insane

I will be shopping tomorrow. I've been doing this with what I had in the house *I only go to town, for groceries, once a week at the most*...mainly using the last of the tomatoes and bell pepper from the garden. I will be picking up leafy greens to eat and zucchini *YUM*.

I'm feeling better this evening than i was earlier for some reason. I netted about 27 carbs today due to the tomato and bell pepper I had with supper, but I feel pretty good with how well I've done considering I'm not really set up, food wise, to do this atm

You're doing fine, Jessica.

Just remember (I don't know if you're a daily weigher) that the combo of sausage and kraut (one of my favorites) is a high sodium meal and you might see some water weight from the water retention that sodium brings. Fear not, however, since day or so of good water intake will wash out that extra fluid.

Remember this, when you're shopping: If it's green and leafy, it's very low in carbs, so it's hard to overdo. I don't even count "core" salad materials, which for me are mixed raw greens, celery, cukes and radishes. I count other stuff, like onions and tomatoes, since they're more "carb intensive."

HTH.

it's very common to feel crummy the first few days of lc-ing, and it normally is sugar withdrawl, at least from what i've seen. usually after 3 or 4 days, you'll find yourself feeling 10 times better, not only from how you are feeling now, but from how you felt before. just hang on a few more days and remind yourself that feeling crummy is the best indication you can get about how much you needed to make a change and get that stuff out of your system.

I'm not a daily weigher. I'm a once a week, at the most, weigher. And since I'm in the middle of my monthly cycle I won't weigh again until after its over because of standard bloating issue. By that time I will have been on Induction for 2 weeks. Besides...scales are liars!!!

a potassium (electrolyte) deficiency can kill you... take potassium pills with a multivitamin... but don't take too much potassium as it can poisen you... follow directions on the bottle... also drink plenty of water but not too much because you can flush out needed nutrients and give yourself digestive problems...

I took a look at this thread because of the headache and nausea mentioned.
I have noticed that I get headache and nausea right after eating CarbMaster low carb ice cream. They pass after about 20 minutes. I can't see anything on the ingredients that would do that to me. Does anyone else have this experience or something similar that might be causing the problems. Of course, I hate the thought of giving up the ice cream--it's the best I've found!

I gather that CarbMaster is a Kroger brand. We don't have any in my area. Could you post the ingredients?

I tried some CarbMaster ice cream bars here...sweetened with Splenda, so they do not upset my stomach. However, I'm not too keen on the texture...not nearly as creamy as CarbSmart. Grabbed some CarbConquest without looking at the ingredients...stOOpid! Malitol in that stuff...poor stomach!! Hope you can discover the culprit.

Thath,

Be very careful with potassium; if you take a multi with it, you shouldn't need any additional potassium. If you are taking diuretics or using salt substitutes (which are potassium chloride) you should avoid it. You really should talk to your doctor before taking any supplements, especially if you take prescription medications. It's very important to acertain that you actually NEED a supplement before you take it, especially something like this that can cause problems if you get too much.

I don't always take a multivitamin, I take no diuretics and I don't use salt substitutes and I don't take any prescription meds. I don't have a doctor--the only time I see a doctor is if its something that winds me up in the ER.
