Hello all. I just started Atkins yesterday (1/2/06) and am on my way to losing 150 pounds! I've done Atkins before (three years ago) and lost 45 pounds, but I hurt my back just before the holidays, and so you can imagine how the pounds crept on by not being able to exercise AND being faced with high-carb holiday treats, then losing my job, going through depression, and being put on medication that messed up my metabolism. I put it all back on plus another 70 pounds. Now that I'm employed and stable again, I was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic, and that was enough to scare me back to reality. Luckily for me, my physician (who is different from the one I had when I lc'd before) not only is supportive of me doing Atkins but actually recommends it to her patients, particularly those who are diabetic or pre-diabetic. It is going to be helpful to have the medical support that so few have. Anyway, I'm glad I found this site and will probably be here a lot for support, and look forward to getting to know all of you!

Hi, Eddie. Yes, you are lucky to have a doc who supports this way of eating. Hope you had a lipid profile (cholesterol, triglycerides) along with the glucose tests. You're likely to see a dramatic change for the better, especially if you're able to step up (so to speak) the amount of moving around you do each day.

The combination of LC and exercise is the best health prescription there is for many of us. And many of us "veterans" are starting the new year with a return to induction. We're just sentimental like that.

Best wishes.

Eddie... I posted to you in KD's thread, but I just noticed you have your own. Stick with the diet, and within a year you'll be one of the losers who's a big winner! Don't know if you've looked at South Beach Diet, but I've been told by some people that it's kind of like Atkins when people cheat on Atkins. I would recommend reading the SBD book just to see if it gives you any insight you haven't gotten through Atkins; SBD was specifically designed by a cardiologist for pre-diabetics and those with high blood pressure. I lost 3 lb. a week on SBD for an extended period last year on my way to almost 70 lb. of weight loss, all the way down to 168 (and I'm 6-2... any more would be unhealthy!)

I enjoyed the holidays and crept back to 190, so now I'm restarting SBD to get back to something close to my goal weight of 170.

When you get down to your goal, you may find that you're no longer pre-diabetic and can get off any medications that are holding you together right now. I was taking 7 pills a day for various things from high blood pressure and cholesterol to acid reflux and was able to give them all up once I lost the weight. You can do it too!
