    Default I love carbs

Hey guys, new to the forum, glad to be here.

Tomorrow at work we start a "biggest loser" type of contest that I somehow got suckered into running. I'm also a contestant... and i've chosen the low-carb way of life to do this thang.

I know the basics.. meat, cheese, eggs... and I plan on doing a lot of bike riding as well. My goal, in three months, is 40 pounds.

Might be a little bit lofty, but I lost 75 in three months of Marine Corps bootcamp (and kept it off for about 5 years) so I think I can do it if I put my mind to it.

    Any tips?

Hi Mike...welcome to the forum. The best tip I can give you is to choose a low carb plan and buy the book...and read it. There is so much more to low carb eating than meat, cheese and eggs. You will be doing yourself a huge disservice if you attempt to go on a low carb diet without first educating yourself in the proper way to go about it. Good luck with your weight loss plans

    Yes.

    Welcome, Mike.

My first piece of advice is to pick a plan and the read the book. There's nothing that will provide a better "road map" to low carb eating than the book that goes with your chosen plan.

Hope you'll make yourself at home here.

Welcome aboard, Mike. Wow, 75 pounds in three months! I think I'll pass on going to boot camp. Lots of good info and friendly people around here. Best wishes.

Yeah.. I did come off a bit flippant there... I realize there is a lot more to it than meat, cheese, and eggs.

A guy I work with is well versed in the lifestyle and has lost a ton of weight with it, so he's given me lots of advice and tips.

This was something i've been thinking of doing for a long time even if the contest never happened.

I've simply put on to much weight since I got out of the Marines.

Also, I see you are from Texas.

I was born and raised in Dallas. Live in NC now though.

Welcome aboard, Mike. My best advice to you is to eat your veggies, drink your water, and remember that weight loss is relative to the ratio of FAT to carbs, not PROTEIN to carbs. Remember not to try a low-fat version of Atkins right now. You need fat to burn fat.

I keep seeing people reference veggies... but i've always been told that veggies are horrid for you on this diet, especially during the induction phase.

Not horrid, just need to watch eating certain ones while on induction. Never met anyone who gained weight eating green vegetables and lettuce. Root crop veggies contain higher amounts of naturally occuring sugar, i.e. onions, carrots, beets. Starchy vegetables you should avoid...potatoes, corn, etc.

Like mom always said, eat your veggies. My opinion as well.

This is why you must do the research! A common misconception about low carb. The induction phase is the most restrictive, and is only two weeks long, but you DEFINITELY need veggies (green leafy ones) everyday!!! You want to stay away from the starchy veg like potatoes, corn, peas.... Gradually vegetables should become a big staple of your daily intake.
