Default Question about the 1-minute muffin

I tried the 1-minute muffin last night and loved it. I had one for breakfast this morning. My question is, when I'm calculating the number of carbs I've consumed for the day, do I count the flaxseed in it as 16g? Or 16g - 13g (fiber)? I'm trying to figure out Fitday and I think I'm confusing myself.

I've done some searching to see if this has already been answered somewhere. I'm sure it has been, but I haven't found it. Help!

Robin

Robin, deduct the fiber from your flaxseed. I use Bob's Red Mill, which says 4 gms carbs, 4 gms fiber, so it is essentially 0 carb, or probably just 1. Now try it with a spoonful of cocoa powder. It's the closest you'll get to chocolate cake, and hardly any carbs, and all that fiber! Wow!

you subtract fiber out for net carbs, for the muffin and for whatever else you eat. net carbs is what you count on atkins.

the tricky part is when you eat stuff with sugar alcohols (which is not always your best bet anyway)-often food manufacturers will subtract those out from the carb count, but for some folks, sugar alcohols impact their body and blood sugar the same as regular sugar. some people sub them out at 1/2, some don't at all, and some just avoid 'em like the plauge. and to complicate matters more, some sugar alochols are better than others. particularly, erythinol (sp) seems less problematic than most.

hope that helps!

Thank you, thank you, thank you... I was hoping that would be the answer!

I wanted to have another one for a snack tonight, but if I counted the first one as 16 carbs, I couldn't eat much of anything else today, let alone another one!

Oh, you just made my day

I'm a happy camper now!

Robin

PS. Thanks again! LOL

Ok, if I do that, then I don't think I'm getting enough carbs. That might explain why the scale isn't budging. Yesterday for example, I had 125 grams of fat, 136 grams of protein, and 14g carbs (after I take out the fiber).

Hmm. Apparently, I'm going to have to rethink this somewhat. Thanks!

you probably need to up your veggies, which is where you want to be getting most of your carbs. do you have the book? and is it a recent or old copy? i recall folks saying that in a very old version, they didn't have the minus fiber rule.

I have the book coming, but it's the version I used before (late 90s). I think I need to get the new one, as well, because I'm confusing myself!

i don't think the late 90's is a problem. it's the very old books that handle it differently, like from the 70's or something.

for what it's worth, i think you're doing great. from your posts, you seem to have a good overall handle on what you're doing, and are simply refining your approach. and i wouldn't be suprised that if you add some more healthy carbs with veggies, your weight may well start to go down again.

Thanks! I don't feel like I am... well that's not quite true, either. I feel pretty good until I step on that dad-blasted scale! I've been digging through the net, my menus, everything I can think of, trying to pin down what's wrong. I guess patience is in order (Something I don't have a lot of, LOL)

you'll get there. if you're feeling good physically, your on the right track normally...the weight can be stubborn. i would say if you find upping your carbs to about 20 doesn't move the evil mr. scale's readout, do a post with a typical menu for a day or two. the people here are very good at making suggestions that can help.

HI Carol, welcome back!!!!

Robin, I have the '90's version of DANDR and it's just fine!!!! Be sure to take your measurements, since the scale can be a cheat and a liar. Measurements don't lie.

How's your activity level? If you are exercising, that will REALLY help make a difference on the scale. Even just walking will help. Park as far as you can away from the doors of stores you shop at, walk to places that are close by instead of driving, stuff like that. Adding exercise can make or break weight loss.

Enjoy the muffins, they are healthy, healthy, healthy!!!! I'm going to try a peanut butter version today.
