Talking Newbie seeks advice

Dear all

It's great to find a site full of like-minded people experiencing much of the same things that I am. I have had a good look through the site but there are a couple of questions that I have that I am really hoping you can answer:

1) How long before you start noticing weightloss - I am around 4 days into induction and haven't really noticed any difference? I am sure it's different for many people but it would be great to hear your experiences and perspectives.

2) If you made the odd mistake (I didn't realise that I shouldn't have any milk in my tea) is it like going back to the beginning again - you have to start induction afresh?

Thanks in anticipation.

Caroline

welcome caroline

instead of milk in your tea use cream, it tastes better and lower carb count
you don't have to start at the beginning again, just go and buy some cream and continue (I am sure that youdidn't use that much milk in your tea)

I noticed it within the first week, (first time dropped 11 lbs in 1 week)
so you should remember that everyone loses at their own body rate, and depending on how much you have to lose.

good luck on your journey

Welcome, Caroline.

Since you mention "induction", I'm guessing that you're following the Atkins program. If so, do you have the book? It is really helpful in explaining how the program (which is in 4 stages) works and includes a list of acceptable foods for induction.

Whether it' is Atkins, or some other low carb eating plan, you really need to get the book so you avoid problems such as milk vs. cream, etc.

As to rate of weight loss, that is very much an individual issue. For me, it was very slow and sporadic. Nevertheless, I normalized my weight and have maintained it for many years now.

Hope you'll make yourself at home here.

Caroline~ Welcome!!!

If I could advise anything I would say read your labels! Whatever you eat before you put it in your mouth, read the label. It seems that little carbs can sneak up on you and before you know it you are cheat"ing"and not even knowing it. Which can be frustrating (eg: your milk issue) something so small and minimal ends up being major & sometimes will actually stall or set your weight loss back. Which is the opposite of what we want. Especially when Induction phase is the fuel starter for your fat burning machine (your body).

pssstt....as far as weightloss...it seems the more one has to lose the faster it comes off and visa versa.
But, when I attempted Induction for the first time I lost 21 pounds the first month, I went from a very tight 16 jean to a baggie 14:hot: ) that motivated me to lose 46 pounds altogether. I got down to a baggie sized 10 skirt. ..I am back in the 16's again though because I slacked and restarting Induction again doesn't allow you to lose as fast as the first attempt!***

Hang in there and keep us posted on your progress!
All the Best!

Welcome Caroline!

You have already received some great advice above, but I just want to reiterate:
*Definitely get the book & read it! If you find Atkins' book too dry, try reading Protein Power by Drs. Michael & Mary Dan Eades. I prefer their breakdown of this woe (way of eating), but I follow Atkins.
*Drink plenty of PURE WATER -- this will keep the ketones flushing out of your body as well as speed up your progress & make you feel great. Aim for about 1/2 your body weight in ounces per day or no less than 64 oz.
*Finally, please note: There is NO "EXPECTED AMOUNT" of weight loss with this way of eating. It varies WAY too widely to even give a ballpark. The first time I went on Atkins, I lost 13 pounds in 2 weeks. The second time (after falling off the wagon), I only lost 4. A LOT has to do with how much you need to lose (ditto above: the more you need to lose, the faster the initial weight loss USUALLY). But a lot depends on how your body processes carbs & fat, too.
Just be patient; you WILL lose eating this way -- even if it takes a couple of weeks to get the ball rolling... just stay the course & you will be rewarded!

I wish you the best of luck,

Caroline, all the above advice. And make sure to eat as much fresh food as you can, stay away from the processed and frankenfoods. You don't need low carb shakes and bars except for those times when you just can't eat a real meal. Fresh veggies and your favorite meats, and of course, eggs! Do NOT skip the veggies. You need them for the nutrients, as well as the variety they provide. DANDR has a huge list of allowable veggies for the woe, and the induction veggies are wonderful! And lots and lots of water. Just plain old water.

Wishing you much success on your journey.

Weight loss varies for people. I did not really notice weight loss until my pants began to slip down, my belly wasn't pouring over the waist line. When you make mistakes or slip up, do not go back to the beginning. Do not focus on the mishap, just move on. I was the type of person that would make a mistake, then waste the rest of the day eating and binging...adding to the already expanding hips!
Like the other responders have said, avoid the processed stuff, avoid treats that say 'low carb' as well, especially on induction. What you will find is, some of those low carb goodies may be so, your body may not metabolise them accordingly...get to know how your body responds to certain foods as you slowly begin adding carbs on (once done with induction.)
Good Luck to you.
