Default minute muffin

I found the recipe for the minute muffin in the OWL forum and wondered if it was ok to eat during induction. I also want to say that this is my third month on Atkins and discovered that I was eating too many carbs. I only lost 6 lbs total. 10 at first then stayed at a 6 lb. loss. 20 grams of carbs are deceiving on fit day.com and I had to revert back to the book which stated 2 cups loosely packed salad and 1 cup cooked veggies. I have been back on track for three days and am back to a 10 lb. weight loss. Hopefully this will continue.

Frannie,
You're not saying that you have been on induction for 3 months, are you???
Despite what the book says, MOST people here will tell you that not moving on to OWL after the first 2 weeks will slow or stall your weight loss faster than anything!
But, if I have misread your post and this is not the case, then there certainly is nothing wrong with going back to induction to *shake things up* a bit.
And I don't really see any reason why you can't have the 1-minute muffin during induction as the net carb total is only "1". (For those who are familiar with it, you can find the recipe for the 1-minute-muffin in the Cooking forum on this site: HERE
It's a great diversion from the same old eggs every day!
Frannie, if you continue to have trouble (which, right now it sounds like you're not!), you should try posting a couple of days' menus for us to look at... In fact, that might not be a bad idea anyway. Sometimes veterans can see newbie mistakes that they can't see...
I wish you the best,

Thanks for the response, but no I have not been on induction the whole time. I was for about a month though. For breakfast I would have four slices of bacon , two eggs & a minute muffin. lunch, two cups of salad with 3 black olives, cucumber slices, 3 cherry tomatoes with vinegar & oil with sardines. Dinner would be something like fish filts fried in butter with a vegetable and salad again. For snacks I would have sf jello with sf whipped topping or pork rinds dipped in mayonaise. Occasionally a sugar free popsicle. Diet rite cola also(not everyday) I now cut back on everything 2 slices of bacon & one egg with tea for breakfast lunch is a plain salad with vinegar & oil (2 cups)and a piece of boiled chicken & pork rinds for an afternoon snack , dinner last night was a steak with coleslaw (1/2 cup) & 1/2 cup cauliflower & a sugar free jello. I walk on the treadmill everyday (2 miles) and drink plenty of water. I also got a recipe for sugar free ketchup from this site and use about a Tbsp. of it occasionally. I hope to kick start the weight loss again. So far so good. I think I was careless with my vegetable portions before.

Hi frannie, and welcome! This forum is a great place for advice and support. Just quickly looking at your menu, I saw maybe a couple of things. The sugar free jello, if you are buying the pre-made or making it from a box, contains aspartame, which for some people causes stalls or prevents losses all together. You might try cutting that out for a few days and see if you have any losses. Also, was your coleslaw homemade or store purchased? Store purchased coleslaw usually contains a ton of sugar, and a serving could contain around 20 carbs! Really, both menus (both before and after) sound acceptable. Also keep in mind that when you don't lose pounds, you may lose inches, especially if you are walking 2 miles a day. If you took your measurements when you started your plan, take them again now and see if there is a difference. Either way, it sounds like you are on track. And yes, the OMM is perfect for induction - 1 net carb, very versatile, and tons of fiber. Good Luck!

Hi Eddie, Thanks for the tip about the jello, I have had two already today. The coleslaw was made with sweetzfree that I just purchased from information on this site. I got the recipe on the sweetzfree site. I only lost 1" everywhere. Hopefully the induction will help.

I'm not sure the one minute muffin complies with the "text book" definition of Atkins induction.

Flaxseed meal isn't included in the list of acceptable foods for induction. In fact, the only mention of it I found on www.atkins.com referred to using it as a fiber supplement - sprinkling it over other foods.

So, I dunno... I'm a little surprised that Atkins didn't address flaxseed meal more specifically, and place it somewhere in his food lists.

Hi, Teel. I agree it's surprising that flaxseed isn't more fully discussed in the later editions of Atkins. By the time the 2002 version came out (which is substantially different in format, but not content, from the 1992 edition) flaxseed had become a commonly available fiber alternative for many successful "Atkids."

I've always suspected that Dr. A didn't like it much, so he glided on by. The OMM is a regular part of my life now, induction included. I use a half/half mixture of flaxseed meal and wheat bran to get a big slug of fiber, either as a muffin or as a cereal.

Barb - do you mean you bypass the almond flour and use only wheat bran and flaxseed?

Yes, only flaxseed and wheat bran. Here's my recipe:

1/4 c. flaxseed/wheat bran (equal parts by weight--I keep this premixed in the freezer)
2 packets Splenda
1/2 tsp. baking powder
Cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice
Mix dry ingredients
Melt 1 TBS coconut oil
Mix with 1 egg
Combine all ingredients in a mug and nuke for one minute.
Slice into three pieces and slather on the cream cheese.

That's it.

For cereal, I mix 1/2 cup of the flaxseed/wheat bran mixture with a scoop of vanilla whey protein powder (Sportpharma from Costco) and 1 cup water. Nuke for one minute, stir and nuke for another minute. Top this with SF syrup, nuts, berries, or any legal goodie you like.

Obviously, I go for speed and convenience over nuance when it comes to cooking up breakfast or a snack.

Can some one tell me what to find more info on this? I am on day 10 of induction and going strong, feeling great, loosing (like 10 pounds so far) and I was thinking I would keep it up another week or two at least...no a good idea? Help, I am confused...

Tanya, some people here are adamant about moving to Ongoing Weight Loss right after your 2 weeks; however, some of us are very metabolically resistant and stall as soon as we start adding carbs. Everyone's metabolism is different, and you need to discover what works best for you. Go ahead and start adding a few carbs, and see how it goes. This way of eating can be tailored to each individual's ability to lose. Some can eat 50 or 60 carbs a day a lose easily. Some have to keep it at 20 or 30 and are happy to lose a lb or 2 a month. After reading some of the experiences of the people in Dr. Atkins book, I am more convinced that sometimes some of us have to keep our carbs way low in order to succeed.

Tanya, I stayed on induction for 9 months and lost 90 pounds. I have not heard that staying on induction stalls you. Dr. Atkins recommended that if you had a lot of weight to lose, you could stay on induction longer. The thing you need to keep in mind is that you need to allow yourself time to go through the various stages of the Atkins approach. Some people get comfortable staying on induction and don't want to move onto OWL, let alone pre-maintence. I have heard some concern expressed that if you stay on Induction too long, it will curtail your ability to increase your carbs later. Remember that you are learning a better way of healthy eating that you can sustain for a lifetime. To do that, you must move on from induction. However, when you move on is an individual question. If you are not bored with your choices on induction, and you have a lot of weight to lose, then I would not worry about staying on Induction for several months. Another thing I did, as specified in DANDR, was, when I moved on to OWL, I just increased my carbs by 5 grams a day but only instead of weekly, I made the increases every 2-3 weeks. Weight loss is a individual journey. Part of the challenge is finding out what works for you. Good Luck.

Help yourself with the veggies, Tanya. Just think "green, leafy (and preferably) raw" and you cannot go wrong even if you have, as Nita and I have, a resistant metabolism.

However, given your relative youth (and assuming no genetic predisposition to type2 diabetes), I suspect you'll find that you can continue to lose with more carbs than induction levels.

As everyone has said, one way or another, OWL is the time to explore your own metabolism and find out what works for you. It's important to take your time for a couple of reasons. 1. Slower weight loss is longer lasting and less taxing on your body. 2. OWL, properly done, is like going to school. This is your opportunity to really learn which foods and in which amounts work for you - so that you can both normalize your weight AND learn how to eat to maintain it for the rest of your life.
