| Looking to re-engage after a while off the forum (and off LC). Started Atkins after my daughter was born in 2002 as I gained along with Mom, and as my Cholesteral #s were high enough to deny me life insurance. Dropped from 223 to 200, brought Cholesteral down and pretty much hit the wall in terms of losing after a year or so. Soon thereafter I started falling off the LC lifestyle and back into old habits, to the point where four years later, as we were preggers with our second child, a son, I had gained back around 18 lbs. Then suddenly, in the last couple of months something strange happened. I started dropping weight, despite being ravenously hungry and eating more than ever (with little exercise). By the time June rolled around, I was down to 198 and decided to finally see a doctor. The day after my son was born I was diagnosed with Stage II diabetes (AC1 of 11.3, fasting sugars of 200+). So, I'm going through education classes, am on metaformin and will be popping back in here to reacquaint myself with a lc lifestyle. Very curious as to how it will help with the disease, especially as during my first education class at the hospital it was stressed the need for good carbs. While I haven't met with a dietician as yet, it was outlined that carbs should represent 45-50% of my daily intake (60-75 grams of carbs per meal, with 15 grams = 1 serving of carbs). I plan on reading Dr. Bernstein's book and trying to get this under control as best I can. It's not about losing weight now, it's about staying alive and setting a good example for my children. |

| Hi dslunceford, Welcome back to LCE! Sorry you have acquired typeII Diabetes. The good news is...a controlled carb diet will help immensely. By all means follow the advice of your physician and dietician. Dr Bernstein's book is a good read, and also I would recommend Dr Atkins book on diabetes control as well. Please let us know how things are going for you. Hopefully at some point, you may get to come off the meds, but only your physician can make that determination along with closely monitoring your status. Welcome back!

| Welcome back. I have a family history of diabetes and I was on the path to developing it myself but I decided to change my eating habits and now I believe I have that under control. I also feel so much healthier overall and I'm losing weight. I just wish I could get others to try it too. Good luck to you.

| Steve, you've picked the right place for advice, encouragement, and a good place to rant and rave, ask questions, and have your rankled nerves soothed when the going gets rough. There is also a section here for diabetics, and it's a good place to get help. You might want to peruse the various threads there - I'll bet any questions you have might have already been answered by someone there. Wishing you better health. |
