Post Try this again.

Let me first start by introducing myself. My name is Misty and I am seriously over weight. I?m not ashamed of telling people how much I actually weigh (which is 291lbs) because it?s pretty evident by looking at me. I am actually 5? 6? and my body shape has a lot to do with disguising my actual size though. I carry most of my weight in my hips, rear and thighs. It was only after I had my son a little over a year ago that I even had much problem with my middle part. Anyway my sad stupid story is that a few months back I lost an almost five year relationship. He left me because he wasn?t sure I was the one for him. I knew because he had expressed it many times in the past that my weight had much to do with it. So here I was left with my son a little over a year old and nothing but the clothing on our backs not even a job. So I had to move in with my parents (and as an adult it is a really humbling experience but at least we are very close so it really isn?t a problem.). I tried a few other plans in the past just recently the 6wbm plan and failed miserably. (I had bought the plan right after my son was born and never stuck with it to restrictive). Anyway just recently my ex has come around trying to be buddies again and I?m not mad at him but I have so much to do for myself and his baggage at the moment would just get in my way so I told him to give me until after the New Year to decide anything. It?s a mutual understanding that we both have issues and love each other very much but will it ever be enough. So here I am back to low carb. doing Adkins. I tried it before many years ago but not serious. I know several people who have succeeded on it an honestly looking at the food list again I like most of the things listed on the induction. (Cheese has always been my weakness on the low fat etc. plans) I?m doing this because even though I?m pretty young (late 20?s) and my weight has slowed me a little but I don?t really have any health issues and am as mobile and unlimited as I want to be. (Something people are surprised by because of the weight on the scale) I just want to live be healthy and get back on my feet. The reason I am telling all of this because if you want to know me this is where I am. One minute I?m kicking but the next I am in doubt mode. I hope everyone can understand and send their love and prayers this way. I?ll do the same for you.

We all have our doubts sometimes. Having a support group like this can really help because when one of us is doubting ourselves and our ability to do this, the rest of us are here to give some encouragement or a good swift kick

No matter how much (or how little) weight we have to lose, it's not easy for any of us. I hope that you'll stick around, and read some more on the site, and maybe even post some.

I look forward to getting to know you!

(BTW... it's Atkins with a "T" not Adkins with a "D") Having the right spelling really helps in finding books and doing research.

I actually bought the book in 2003 and I always mispell the darn name (I had a friend with the last name of Adkinson so for some reason it just always comes out like that. I do the same thing with other brand names. I use to say discovery instead of discover card one of my many mental duhs) I ended up giving it to my MIL when she lost hers so I'm off to buy a new one. Right now I'm just trying to wrap my brain around the do's and don't again. After trying so many things plans I get things a little mixed up sometimes. Thanks for the welcome.

welcome aboard, misty! congratulations on your decision to take charge of your life and improve things for yourself and your son.

it can be a little scary starting a new journey, but that's ok. most everyone here has been where you are, more or less. getting a new copy of the atkins book is a great idea! that will help tremendously. and since you can eat when you're hungry, atkins is one of the most do-able plans i've ever found.

there's lots of encouragement and ideas to be had here, so make yourself at home!

sometimes things just seem so over whelming -- we've all been there, but one thing that really helps is having a support group. Many of us could not have gotten to where we are without one... i know i could not have.

great thing about on line support, is it is ALWAYS here

read all you can... i thought we had a "newbies/induction" thread, but i can't seem to find it
(I've been away too long)
but read all you can off this site.... the "stickies" up at the top usually have great info
click on LEARN up at the top - you will find good stuff there too

also, http://www.atkins.com/articles/atkins-phases
and from their site, try not to get "hooked into" buying their foods... always try to eat "real" foods, not the prepackaged low carb stuff... that's a good way to slip off track.

find foods you love and keep them on hand.... I too have a weakness for cheese, and i "try" to limit it, but that's not always easy. I love nuts, but i have TMJ which makes it difficult to eat them often, especially almonds, so i had to switch to nut butters -- which are fabulous.

but LOTS of veggies
eggs (hard boiled, deviled and make some quiche and freeze them in single size portions)
beef, chicken, fish and the sort... again, precook some so it's always handy.

I hope this gets you rolling... just remember, LOTS of water
and read as much as you can.

have questions... never hesistate to ask... the only stupid question is the one not asked
feeling frustrated or "down" -- post away... we've all been there and this is one of the best support groups out there.

good luck on your journey and Welcome to LCE!

Welcome Misty. I think you are wise to try to get your arms around the essentials of the Atkins approach. Too many people simply try to follow some form that they "heard" from others as being how you "do Atkins". Congratulations on your decision to take charge of your life. With your attitude, I am sure you will succeed.

Welcome, Misty. Even some of us who have been "Atkinsing" for a while still occasionally read the book again, just to refresh our memories, to get a little more encouragement, and sometimes find that we are looking at things just a tad wrong and need to change our attitude.

This is the best place for encouragement, advice, and ideas! You'll find lots of people to help you out.

Thanks everyone for the welcome! I'm really excited about it all. I remember at least five years ago our family physician had recommended Atkins to me because he himself had lost so much weight on the plan. He told me then that there were so many people just using some parts they like and doing what they considered the Atkins plan. He was very adamant then that it wasn?t the healthiest idea to do it that way. The sad part was that I was so young and didn?t have the patience or self-control to do a plan like this. It was easier just to starve myself and never stop. I lost nearly 80 lbs in 4 months that way and felt miserable. I can remember eating mostly tomato soup but watered down to nothing getting three or four days out of one can for my meals. And I did high impact aerobics 3 hours a day, plus worked at a very hot and high energy factory and the did an hour of ab training. I didn?t look to great either. I have then since studied and learned much about exercising to shape my body. It works to it?s just staying motivated.

Thanks again!

Hi Misty,

I don't know about patience. This diet/WOE worked faster for me than anything else I've ever done. The nice part is the consistent energy that I have when I'm eating right. Note I've exercised during my weight loss - but 3 hours a day - I don't think so. Much more like three hours a week. I try and get half an hour to an hour of aerobic exercise in every other day. That's it. My usual suspects are the treadmill, the elliptical and the rowing machine.

Drinking lots and lots of water is probably the other big key on top of the exercise. That reminds me I should go get me another big glass.

Good luck

ah, a wise physicain--those "bits and pieces" habits are responsible for many of the myths about low carb. it can't work for people who don't follow the plan.

from what you've said, it sounds like having a plan and following it exactly is going to be especially important for you. i'm sure you probably realize by now what you've just described is extremely unhealthy. there's a reason why you felt miserable and you still weren't happy with your appearance. i, too, in the distant past have gone the starvation/manic exercise route, and know how terribly unsustainable and unhealthy it is. but now, i've found something that can work for me permanently, and you can have the same.

there is a mental shift that happens for most sometime after they've been doing this a while when it stops being about losing weight as quickly as possible. in fact, after a certain point, it more or less stops being about weight at all.

it's the habit changes that you make that will make the difference, both in your weight now, but also in your overall health and your future. if you focus on changing the habits and the steps and let go of the weight focus completely, it actually becomes easier to lose weight because you are merely taking healthier steps, and the changes you make will "stick" because you're finding healthy, comfortable, pleasant ways to eat and live. even better, you'll be happy with what you're eating and how you feel. what's not to love?

good luck and peace out to you.
