Please post a typical days' menu so we can see what you're eating. That way, we'll be better informed about you, and you'll get a good response.

Welcome, Squig.

It's not usual, but far from rare. Two questions: 1. How's your water intake? 2. How's your elimination? (Many people experience constipation in the early stage)

In my humble opinion, the reason you're constipated and not losing weight optimally is because you're not eating enough vegetables. You should be eating at least 3 cups of low glycemic vegetables each day -- at the very least. As for water, the general rule around here is to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, then you need to be drinking 100 ounces of water each day.

Have you read the book through and through? Dr. Atkins laid out a nice list of induction friendly foods, and really encouraged eating the 3 cups of veggies every day, with at least 2 of those being salad veggies. Adding the veggies and drinking lots more water will help with the constipation, and will also help with the weight loss.

Reading the book is absolutely vital in understanding how to make this a viable, healthy way of eating. I'm actually reading my book over again, and highlighting parts that will help me to adjust my eating for optimal health.

Wishing you success!

Squig,

I'd probably cut out the diet coke, or at least limit to ONE can per day -- and really increase your water. 2 glasses a day is not good enough. Water will help "flush" your system.

try adding different protein sources too, eggs are going to get real boring really quick. various fish and chicken dishes will liven up your diet. and having a nice big salad for a meal helps get in all your veggies for the day. just toss it all in a bowl and add your favorite dressing.

hope this helps,

You're experiencing the induction weight loss of doing a low carb diet. One reason so much weight is lost during induction is the depletion of glycogen stores. each gram of glycogen is stored in muscles (and certain organs) along with 3 to 4 grams of water. so much of that 6 pounds is water. You may have had a very high level of glycogen stored.

squig,
Yes, a little fatigue is normal until your body gets used to burning fat for fuel instead of the carbs. It's also called *induction flu* and should be gone by the end of the first week(for most folks).

Also, the *bad breath* is very normal...it is called ketosis. Again, it means you are burning fat(which is good). Now is a good time to hit the water full tilt if you can...at least eight 8oz glasses per day, 2-4 more glasses if you can manage it as well.

Good going...keep up the good job!

At roughly the end of week 1, you'll get the induction flu. The bad breath (as described above) is a symptom of ketosis. (You'll find yourself brushing your teeth a lot - which has the side benefits of quicker dentist visits. )

Elimination is food going out the backdoor so to speak.

But you've been given very good advice on what to add to your diet. Water, water and some healthy vegetables.

I like eggs and bacon for breakfast, Chicken Caesar salad for lunch (sans crouton) and a healthy portion of meat with broccolli or some other healthy vegetable (no corn) for dinner.

One thing I would check is the lables on the sausages you buy. Try and avoid any carbs there (I've seen them with as high as 8 carbs/serving!)
